Meh, some would consider me smart, others may consider me dumb as a post - I can function, and do my job to a high level of competency, so I would consider myself about average. And thats fine by me :)

I think "desparate" is a little too strong a word to make the answers as meaningful as they could be.

Definitely. I find it hard to understand people who lurk. Why wouldn't you want to give your opinion on something? People who can read other people's comments and decide that those people have covered the subject adequately are humble in an incredibly awesome way that will do them well in life.
Are they humble or are they lazy? Seriously though, I think a lot of lurking is people who want to kill some time without actually getting caught up in a discussion and not a reflection of anything deeper than that.

well, I mostly lurk because if an opinion is already adequately represented, I feel kinda stupid to say the exact same thing as the 5000 posts before mine.

Nope. I know I'm intelligent. I have tons of bits of paper to prove it. One day I plan to make an origami robot and conquer the world.

Maybe I'm just a misanthrope, but this is what I imagine the motivation is for posters who post inordinately, long walls of text on, often, minor issues.
With all due respect, life is complicated, and often even minor issues have many facets that need to be unpacked. I find media like twitter down-right insulting. I mean how can you do anything justice in just 140 characters? Yet this is the way that the world seems to be going, tiny "sound bites" that have no argument or substance, just a statement that people can ignore or believe depending on their personal prejudices.

Do you know what the word University means? Uni Veritas. One Truth. Universities and other educational institutions were formed to try and find the truth behind the universe. This culture of learning used to be common in Europe, where debating, forum discussion and even the dinner-time conversation were places to discuss stuff and come away with more than you knew before. Newspapers used to be raked over the coals and publish full-page retractions if they made a single factual error.

This culture of education and enlightenment is being replaced by things like twitter (140 character, no references, no argument), TV news full of "sound bites" and newspapers that seem to delight in spreading misinformation, and I can't remember the last time I read a retraction. As for dinner-time conversation... I went out with a group last week and between texting their friends and taking photos of the food the conversation was a series of short exchanges with very little structure or content.

Frankly internet forums are one of the last places where one can go and have a decent discussion. Being written off as someone trying to look clever ... well, that is insulting at best. I find that those who are trying to look clever (as opposed to actually being clever) tend to write short sarcastic posts that add nothing to the discussion and instead just pick at a tiny point in someone else's post (like a typo).

I'm not desperate to be seen as anything.

I try to ensure that my posts accurately convey what I mean, and that I've written them in a way I would actually say IRL.

I like to try and get across my spoken mannerisms as much as my actual thoughts, because then I feel like I'm putting forward a much more accurate depiction of myself.

... Or maybe I just overthink things. =D

Not really, I don't really care if people think I'm smart or not so I just post what I feel like.

I think your avatar includes a quote about Length and Thickness! ^^

I've been wanting to mention how much I enjoy your avatar for some time now, but no thread seemed appropriate prior to this one.

Let me sit here on my sofa and psychoanalyze your clear obsession with Dick Jokes.

....

Naw, I can't summon up enough funny bullshit to actually make the required wall of text for that joke to work properly. :p

Nope, I just act naturally without caring if people think if I'm smart or not.

On a completely unrelated note, did you know that I speak several languages, can solve the Monty Hall problem, and read the classics for fun?

I wouldn't call it lazy because there shouldn't be any pressure to talk and if you don't want to it's not getting marks. There probably is a middle ground where you say things that other people have missed and would be helpful, but don't feel the need to go out of your way to express myself. I find it hard not to chime in even if people have said similar things to what I want to say

I was about to put yes before I realised that most of my posts here are rather silly and if there was one place on the internet I'd want to look smart in, it would be The Escapist.

In life and the Internet I prefer to come off as borderline idiotic.

I'm not dumb and never have been but I hate the expectations of others in real life. As a kid I was always called on and aske to do this or that when I never wanted to.
On the internets it's best to come off dumb but be fully prepared not to be. Wait for someone to pounce on you then you'll absolutely crush them.

I am by no means desperate to appear smart on the internet.
I am an intelligent person and from that I would have to assume many of my posts would seem well considered.
You could say I don't have an explicit interest in making myself appear as intelligent as possible but I would deliberately avoid appearing stupid unless doing so in an obviously ironic manner.

I prefer to think of them less as "Dick jokes" and more as "Dick appreciation".

Nope. In fact I think that people trying too hard to seem smart is what causes so many of the debates* around here.

Without question. But then, it's nice to have a few seconds to actually compose my thoughts and put them into something legible. I'm far less eloquent in person, so I overcompensate for it online where I'm not at quite such a disadvantage (even a half second pause during speech can make you look like a moron).

It's probably not healthy and I'm not sure I do it all the time, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't do it quite a bit.

I am. I don't really care about video games or anything else on this website. So why do I post? Because my e-peen grows any time I get the last word in a long conversation. I also use phrases like "player agency" and "ludonarrative dissonance" as a way of confusing people so that they can't critical of me.

Look upon my posts and be in awe, filthy peasant! All 379 of them...

I feel lonely at night. Hug me please. :(

Guess it mattered to me when I was younger. Most of the time now I state my point and I'll argue it if need be honestly I don't really care what people on the net think of me or my intellect.
