So Escapees, I'm curious, are you employed? For the poll I focused on money, but there are a lot of other factors I'm interesting in. What field do you work in? What's the nature of your position? Are you happy doing what you're doing?Any interesting tid-bits to share in regards to your employment experience? I've been wondering how the escapist community was faring in the job market.

k is in dollars, but try to go with equivalent buying power in your respective country (if you're aware of what such equivalencies are).

It might help if you specified the currency of the poll, for example 10K in GBP is worth a lot more than 10K in USD.

Myself, I'm a Physics Technician, got the job last month after a period of unemployment. Not what I'd like to do long-term, but it's a nice stable starting job while I decide what my next career move is.

I don't really like posting how much I earn on the internet, but I am currently employed as a microbiologist and parasitologist, and for a year and a half I was a biochemist. I prefer working as a microbiologist, but I enjoy working in different departments in order to flesh out my knowledge and to ensure things don't get too stale. That, and I like the idea of not having as many restrictions on the types of jobs I can apply for.

That's kinda vague. Are you like a medical laboratory scientist or something else? I've noticed that med techs do get kinda shafted in the pay department.

I am a veterinary microbiologist working for a private company. While I wouldn't say I get "shafted" in the pay department I could earn more working for another company, it is just an issue of my location really.

Yep. I just used google here to see how much money I make in US dollars, and I'm in the (10-18k) camp.

I work the graveyard shift at a bakery. It's been a little over 2 years now. The nature of my position is I do everything that needs to be done, basically. I'm only unhappy when my boss is around. He used to be pretty cool, but for some reason he's changed a lot in the last year or so. Thankfully, I don't really see him, except when he arrives early in the morning to actually open the place, but by that time I'm about to leave, so he doesn't bother me too much.

It's only me, another dude and a girl, and I guess you could say we are all fuck ups. We all got our college degrees but we've done nothing with them. There's a lot of banter, and we laugh pretty much from the hour we start until we're done. The work environment there is fucking hilarious so at least there's that. We've actually received complaints before because we were too loud.

In our time there, we came up with a few recipes and ideas of our own (don't tell my boss I'm using his ingredients) so when it's time to leave, instead of going home we still have to deliver these cakes, breads and other pastries we make during the night to make some extra money, and it's a decent amount of money every day, to be honest, which I did not take into account when I answered the poll.

Not at all what I expected to be doing at 28, but you know what, I really like doing this. I used to hate it, but not anymore. I guess that's what I get for kind of ruining my own career at the very beginning and then pissing away the next 10 years of my life doing nothing of value. This didn't bother me for a very long time, but I've been trying to turn my life around for the past 2, 3 years. It's pretty difficult when you don't have the spare time you used to have as a teenager, though. Good news is, the three of us learned a lot there and if things go our way, there's a good chance we will have our own business in the next 12 months or so.

tldr: Yea, I'm employed.

Unemployed, because I'm a student. Might have a summer job and I'm going to be working next semester, but I'm not going to have a stable job for at least 2 years. Luckily, the world needs programmers so it shouldn't be too hard to find!

I'm a college student so not currently employed, but I have secured a job as a financial analyst (fun stuff, I know) for after graduation, so I answered the poll with my future job in mind. The field is finance, the nature of the job is that it's a "development" program, so they cycle me through different departments (treasury, investment relations, corp finance, etc) until they decide what's my best fit. I'm reasonably happy with it as, short of investment banking, this is the sort of role I'd expect to get with a bachelor's degree in finance. Pay's decent, around industry standard.

Sometimes I can't help but wonder if twenty years from now I'll wish I took my other potential career route instead though (more focus on my history major --> work abroad for a few years, pick up a language or two --> good grad program --> foreign service). Maybe I'm over-romanticizing it but being a diplomat sounds more interesting than being a corporate VP.

unemployed due to a disability but I'd love to work. Sadly according to the government if I did find a job it'd need to be long term and well paying or I'd lose the benefits I need to survive.

As of tomorrow, I am. School's done so now I'm working for the summer. 40+ hours a week as of tomorrow, all the way until September. Makes me enough to cover the yearly tuition, so that's good enough for me. Sits right around 10k, IIRC.

I pretty much fall under 10k since I earn the minimum wage (UK).

What field do you work in?
Retail (Sales Assistant)

What's the nature of your position?
Serving customers and everything related inside the store (putting out/ rerrange stocks, maintaining the store tidiness and assist with customer quries etc).

Are you happy doing what you're doing?
Somewhat, I am pretty much "content" at my position expecially when I was unemployed for five year after I graduate Uni (yes it is my first job). There is pro and cons to it but honestly I am perfectly fine working there at the moment (I was unhappy with the previous manager but she has now moved to another store).

Any interesting tid-bits to share in regards to your employment experience?
I learn that most products will have a "PLU" number (it is printed "PLU" follow by six digits numbers) visible on the product (however most food and a few produc won't have the PLU numbers label on it) which is pretty much the source code to identify that product.

I'm unemployed, cos student. It's worth mentioning that where I live, the government pays students a monthly sum for showing up to lessons, and since I'm rather frugal money isn't an issue. What's more, Uni's free for locals, too. All in all, being a student here ain't half bad.

"Equivalent buying power" is a little bit deceptive.

On the one hand I earn in the lower half of the $50-70k range, which would be a comfortable middle class existence in other parts of the US.

On the other hand, I live in tech-gentrified shithole San Francisco, California. Where that 50-70k can afford me an apartment with only one room mate (I pity the poor suckers who make less and have to live with 2-3) OR a car, but not both.

I do private security for a healthcare provider. It's a job. The benefits are great. It's not what my horribly overpaid Uni degree was supposed to offer, but I'm doing tons better than many people in my position.

Nature of my position? Mostly either keeping out, or keeping in, depending on the situation, people with far worse problems than my own. Also, according to some people, being racist and/or homophobic just for the hell of it, although the local police department seems to have disagreed so far.

My awesome Manager, and Assistant Manager/ex-girlfriend/bestfriend have quit both quit working at the place I have been working seasonally for the last few years, and they were replaced by a super ***** new Manager, my other close friend as the new AM, and they got a complete moron as a new District Manager.

The new Manager invited me to come work for her, but my AM friend warned me away, saying she's an unreasonable intolerable *****. My AM/ex/BF apparently knows her too and agrees that she's horrible.
So basically I've been warned away from returning.
I am therefore officially unemployed.
Yaaaay.... >_>

Hopefully I can grab a job at this comic book shop here soon.

In the meantime, I'm a student.

I work graveyard shift at a gas station. It pays well enough for how ridiculously easy the job is. I spend about 3 hours of my shift every night watching movies and stuff on my laptop.
I ticked the 10 - 18K box, last year I made a bit over 11K while only working part time and going to school. But I'm out of school now and will be working quite a bit more.

What field do you work in?
I sell gasoline to people and clean stuff. Not sure what that falls under.

What's the nature of your position?
I service the few customers that come to get gas but mostly I clean the parking lot and change garbage bags. Sometimes I service the pumps and computers when they aren't working right.

Are you happy doing what you're doing?
Eh. Job is piss easy but the few customers I do get make me want to throttle them. I guess I'm pretty happy with it. Certainly not something I want to do for the rest of my life though.

Any interesting tid-bits to share in regards to your employment experience?
Nope. Simple job doing simple things. Got nothing interesting to share :(

i have gotten in good with my managers though. I could be sent off to my company's manager training program whenever I feel like going. Just got to figure out if thats what I want to do.

Well, technically, in that I start work at a library on Tuesday, don't know if that counts.
