I work as a medical microbiologist and earn enough to live quite comfortably. I voted on my income, but would rather not specify in this post, so it's not so obviously associated.

My job has to do with both diagnoses for patients' samples and research, although it's hard to quantify: It kind of depends on which diagnostic laboratory I'm responsible for in a given week (they differ a lot in terms of time consumption, leaving more or less time for the research aspect of my job).

Your poll is a bit problematic. "Unemployed" for people who may not have a job, for people who are pupils in school, who are students at a university, who are retired... I don't think all of those belong in one category, really.
Honestly, I don't think the "retired" category is going to skew the results substantially in the case of this site. That aside, yes, I'd agree. I made the post in haste yesterday and then, after coming back to view it and the results, I took a glance at the poll and immediately said to myself, "FUCK, I forgot to exclude the students". Oh well. It was still a decent thread to read through. I guess I could make a separate thread asking the proportion of students and whether or not they're employed and extrapolate a clearer picture from that lol.

You're right, but I wasn't just thinking of old age but also people with disabilities and the like. *shrug*

To be fair, it seems like some of the students in this thread have (at least part-time) jobs, so completely excluding them wouldn't have been perfect, either. I luckily didn't have to have one when I attended university, but I did have one when I was in high school. Seems pretty common, if only to add to one's allowance or sometimes to help finance higher education.

Anyway, yeah. I don't think the poll can be taken at face value. It makes it look like The Escapist community is full of unemployed folks, when it's probably mostly students without a part-time job.
