Not only do I hate the idea of a closed off app store built into the operating system
Hope you don't own a smart phone...That scaremongering closed-system "catastrophe" crap Gabe Newell spouted about Windows 8 is only a half-truth. Windows 8 and Windows RT are all but separate products. Windows RT runs only on ARM systems. It comes pre-installed on tablets and the like and won't be available in stores. The closed bit comes from Microsoft restricting Windows RT-compatible software to being sold on the Windows Marketplace. Anything in the Windows Marketplace will run on both Windows RT and Windows 8. Windows 8 runs on Intel and AMD 32-bit and 64-bit processors and will be compatible with existing software.
And there's a desktop in both, but in Windows RT, it's really only good for Task Manager, some Explorer and Control Panel stuff, and the included copy of Office. If the Start screen has you in such a tizzy, try thinking of it as an overly-glorified Start Menu and spend most of your time in the desktop.

Yeah, I'll definitely pay $75 for a buggy beta version of a crappy tablet OS
Opine however you want, but final pricing hasn't been announced and an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro will cost $40 from launch through the end of January. And only $15 if you buy a new Windows 7 computer now and straight through to launch.
.
Now, before you all tear me apart, if you're worried about the future of gaming on Windows, get more information from the Windows side of tech news, don't just look at video game news and rely solely on the word of a man worried about what might happen to his cash flow on the off chance that the Windows Marketplace takes off and gives him his first taste of notable competition.
No big developer or publisher is going to simply abandon the vast Windows XP/Vista/7 audience the moment Windows 8 hits.
