I think you might be mistaking the cost of a player to how much money they earn per year. Some players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, have traded clubs for fees of around 80 million, but he's earning between 30,000 and 56,000 (there are varied reports) per week. Whilst that's a hell of a lot of money I doubt there'll ever be a player that earns 52 million a year...
I'm fairly confident it's a 6 figure sum. The numbers I've heard are between £150-200k

I'll probably watch a few games. Supporting Japan over Holland though, should be funny if Japan wins over Holland next week!

C'mon England!

After tonight's match, Greene and Heskey better not start another one.
I kinda agree in principle, but Heskey put in a decent performance and Capello seems adverse to picking Hart to start (would ol' calamity really be better?).

And it's called football, not soccer! (only yanks call the game soccer! Cause they think football is played with your hands...)

Hey England,

I'm also supporting Argentina as an actual contender for the Cup.
Is that video a joke? I mean, until they said "Cars, and Freedom." I did kinda like it.

Yeah I've been watching it quite a bit because the World Cup is the only time I watch the sport. I'll be watching any matches with teams I'm supporting (Australia who are playing in the wee hours of the morning tomorrow and Greece, who got destroyed last night) and any matches that look like they will be good like the England vs USA one.

It's gonna be an interesting month as a lot of matches I will want to see start between 11pm-6am. Ah well, I'll be catching up on sleep at school, unlike anything interesting is gonna happen there.

My Dad found one of them in our shed last night, I made decent use of it during the Greece vs Korea game but couldn't use it for England vs USA because the match started at 4am here and majority of my family were asleep.

It might be the world's most popular sport, but in the States soccer is roughly as popular as bowling and fly fishing. There was a time about ten years ago when the women's soccer team with Mia Hamm made soccer exciting, but that was extremely short-lived.

we r a shoe in for the next round! WOOT WOOT
England... technically a good team, but always disappointing in the actual performance.

I don't watch most sports, due to not caring about any competition not featuring someone I directly know. However, I won't have to watch the world cup to know what's going on in great detail, thanks to the total media saturation it receives in the UK. And the people I live with being massive football fans.

Personally I find football to be a tremendous waste of time, if I wanted to watch 90 minutes of amateur dramatics, I'd head down to my local school theatre.

Yes. I usually vote for Brazil, since some of my family live there, but the US seem to be doing ok this time. I think Argentina has a very good chance to win, especially with their coach.
I'm sorry - is the bolded statement irony?

I'm watching pretty much every match, watched all 5 so far but mainly supporting England. Argentina were a joy to watch as expected, England were fun to watch but that draw was an absolute travesty. Robert Green just lost all his fans here.

All the senseless hate...

I am a sports journalist, and love every sport unconditionally... except curling. Curling can go lie down into the street and die.

Tim Howard is one of the best keepers in the cup, the goal the U.S. gave up today was NOT his fault, it was Onyewu and Bocanegra.

and Futbol will become more popular in the U.S. if we can reach the final four teams. After we advance (along with Jolly Ol' England) we get Germany... which bodes badly. If Ballack was playing, the U.S. would be royally screwed. Since he's not, a win isn't out of the question.
I kinda like curling because its an Olympic sport that I could do.
