Seems like your poll is figuring out how many people on this forum are male.
But anyway. I'm female, 32, and have never had piercings.
I think trying to fit in with the crowd by harming or mutilating yourself is a pretty dumb decision, and I think that I'd pass that feeling along to my kids if I ever have any. But that being said:
1. A girl getting pierced, once she's old enough to choose it for herself? Fine.
2. A little baby getting pierced, because her mom wanted her to look a little cuter than she already was - at the cost of pain that the baby can't even understand?
Lady, you disgust me. You don't deserve a kid.
Reminds me of those puppies in Black Beauty who got their ears cropped.
3. A boy getting pierced, once he's old enough to understand the ramifications? Well... okay.
But while our culture sees a girl with pierced ears as normal, that's not how our culture sees a boy with pierced ears. So a boy needs a higher standard of "informed consent."
4. Piercings in other visible places? Be informed!
You're branding yourself in a certain way, and limiting your job opportunities (and more). So I think you shouldn't be allowed to do this before you're at least 16 (old enough to care about job opportunities).
Also: A classmate in college took her new belly-button piercing into a hot tub... and ended up in the hospital. That's an open wound that shouldn't be exposed to germs, people!
5. Personally? I wouldn't date a man with a pierced ear. In my family's culture, a pierced ear means slavery. And for me it means "girly," and I wouldn't want a girly man.
I don't think I could ever get past these two instinctual reactions, so that's that.
