Personally, I preferred Arkham Asylum. I thought the open-world nature in City didn't work too well alongside the rest of the mechanics.

I really need to get Arkham city >.>

However I can say that Asylum was one of the best games I've ever played, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Asylum by far.

Better atmosphere by far, the atmosphere was SO GOOD it was ridiculous, so creepy and awesome. City lacked a lot of that atmosphere. There's nothing in City which compares to Killer Crocs lair, or the Scarecrow sections, or just the creepiness of Asylum in general.

The sandboox didn't thrill me that much either, so I preferred the more directed approach of Asylum.

Riddler challenges in Asylum I preferred too, City just went overboard in that aspect to the point that I couldn't give a fuck about doing all his ridiculous challenges any more.

Also the controls were better in Asylum. And I preferred having less gadgets. In City there were just too many gadgets that I forgot to use them.

Fighting knife wielders was better in City though.

Overall, I'd say city, I'm not quite sure why, but as a whole package, it's just better.

However, asylum delivered FAR more on the atmosphere. The asylum was creepy, and there were two characters whom city was lesser without, the scarecrow and killer croc.

Hmm tough choice, why isnt there a cop-out option for "liked both equaly", i guess if i had to pick one over all i'd take city just because it has alittle more vareity with all the events and side missions, i particularly enjoyed the riddler rooms and the just gliding around the city dive bombing people, the zaszs phone killer thing was pretty dull though.

Playing Arkham City at the moment.

I'm pretty "meh" on both of them. I wish all that design and polish had been spent on a non-Batman game.

If I had to choose I'd go with City over Asylum. The combat has been tuned up and playing as Catwoman is surprisingly fun.

No idea what everyone else is talking about with regards to Asylum having atmosphere. I sure didn't feel any of it.

Asylum. I preferred the atmosphere that people may or may not feel, and city has a distinct lack of direction for me. But maybe that's my dislike of the millions of unreachable riddler trophies scattered everywhere.

Overall story: Asylum. There is a batter narrative structure in Asylum. I did not have to hunt for the next part of the story as much as I did in City. By having three villains to play with, as well as two minor ones, it gave more time to develop some rather great moments that did not feel hackneyed and forced.

Overall gameplay: City. Combat is much smoother in this game. The Puzzles are a lot easier to solve. Getting around is a little easier as well.

Overall commentary about Batman: City. To me, the Batman persona is nothing more than Bruce Wayne getting to act out his childhood revenge fantasies. What better place to do that other than one giant sandbox where he can go psycho on everyone and not have to worry about a lot of collateral damage? Instead of having to place criminals behind bars, he has a place where he can menace them and let them go.

Overall: I don't have a favorite, I loved both games, each for different aspects of the respective games. I refuse to vote, since IMHO they both do what I've waited for a video game to do... Get Batman right. And they did.

They're both excellent games and I've replayed both several times and loved every second but if I had to pick one, it'd be Asylum, by a narrow margin and mainly because of the Scarecrow levels.

City by far. Most of the Riddler puzzles are actual puzzles instead of "collect x gadget so you can get to y", combat is much more fine tuned, and Detective vision has been appropriately nerfed. It's still useful as all hell but it's no longer so useful that you turn it on and never turn it off for the entire game. Storywise City is alright, but Asylum is better, but gameplay wise City cut out the two most irritating parts of Asylum: The Scarecrow sections and the Poison Ivy section.

The Scarecrow sections were fine and fun...on the first playthrough. On subsequent playthroughs they grind progression to a halt in favour of an admittedly boring stealth section. The Poison Ivy section was a giant pain in the ass and the low point of Asylum.

The atmosphere is SOOO GOOD because it makes you feel VULNERABLE as the all-powerful Batman which is what I really suspect.

You're set lose in this labyrinthian Asylum - you don't know the layout, hostile thugs are on the lose, Batman's greatest enemies are on the loose and he can't do anything about it.

It was great. I didn't know what was around the next corner, what dangerous supervillain was about - Joker was taunting me through the voiceover system. The first time playing through the Scarecrow sections were intense.

Also Killer Croc. I had no idea where and when he'd show up so there was a great "being hunted" element in the game especially every time I had to go underground.

It was a rare case of atmosphere and setting done right.

I think I preferred the gameplay of City (the combat was better for one) but I preferred the story an pacing of Asylum.

City because I liked the sandbox and the side missions better. I also preferred the combat and the variations in special moves in City. Asylum had better story and better atmosphere. I would probably have picked Arkham Asylum if it had the same combat as Arkham City. However I felt myself running through empty corridors a lot and with the exception of the occasional joker box that popped up there was little fun in those sections.

However I did miss Scarecrow in Arkham City.

I would pick city. The gameplay was fine-tuned to the point where if I went back and played asylum, I would probably be irritated with the lack of so many gameplay features. Actually useful quickfire gadgets, and the new varieties of takedowns. City gets bonus points for going from the terrible Ivy and titan Joker boss fights, to the Mr. Freeze fight which has become one of my all-time favorite boss fights. Riddler was also better in city IMO. As was the ending. I do have to say though that the Mad Hatter couldn't compare with Scarecrow. I also didn't care for Talia. She was actually kind of annoying. Oh and I almost forgot but Nolan North was fantastic as the Penguin and that museum level was damn good.

City is the better game. Better encounter design, better bosses, better puzzles and more options and freedom for the player.
Atmosphere, story and gfx are all about the same quality.

Same here. Asylum seemed more story-driven because of the smaller locale and focus on indoors environments. City lacked direction.

I preferred Batman: Arkham Asylum. I felt too many enemies had guns in Batman: Arkham City and the amount of disarming you had to do just became tedious. Plus the open world of Arkham City had a lack of focus compared to Arkham Asylum which was more story driven.
