I have two salient experiences.

Tribes 2 - attack, really old, yes, but brilliant for its time. I loved maxing out speed equipment, and harassing an enemy base from afar. Any time a person would seek to counter my assault, I would have a myriad of options. Wait with an ambush, harass THEM from a distance, or flee.

Stealing a flag from a juggernaut was something only made difficult by the presence of anti-air/vehicle projectiles. Even those had counters. It was, in short, exhilarating.

Oh, and sneaking into a base to blow up power sources? Always fun.

COD4 - defense, I enjoyed solidifying the front line of death matches, mowing down rushers, and making room for our counter attacks.

Zombie mods particularly so. Being in the last stand, fending off interlopers.

I kill things as the situation allows. If I happen to have a chance to set them up the bomb, sure, I'll plant.

really does depend on the game and the level, but most of the time im running in with a shotgun and just going crazy.

think about it, you dont need to defend if you've smashed you foe to bits and there is nothing to defend against!

it really depends on the game and situation, sometimes if you loose the initiative, you loose, therefore it's better to attack, and keeping the momentum. However, if the terrain and situation are in your favour, defense is the way to go.

I read somewhere that the anglo-saxon (so by extension, English people and the greater part of white north Americans) psyche is pre-programmed to be desfensively and conservatively minded, while ethnicities such as the Gauls or Celts are more pre-disposed to aggressive, innovative and somewhat foolhardy attack.

This almost genetically decided psychological attitude to defence or attack manifests itself not only in war (where it has been well documented: Agincourt or Waterloo for the English [Anglo-Saxon], all Napoleon's battles from 1793-1815 for the French [Gauls]), but also in sport. Take for example the French rugby and football teams, renowned for their attacking swave and initiative; this provides a stark contrast to the English sporting attitude of staunch defence and workman-like attack.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this theory bore itself out in gaming aswell and would be intrigued to know the results.

I enjoy attacking, but i'm bad at that, so i'm more defensive. By being defensive i usually win and that makes me more happy that charging the enemy and loosing.

Both are good, I did love the perfect fort in sourceforts we made. We were all friends so we worked together to make complicated guard towers and an entry maze, where we changed its route each break.

Offense all the way. I just cant bear to sit and wait, I either run with guns ablaze.
Also, I prefer the "BAM" way of attacking, not flanking and stealthing and stuff. :D

I always run around shooting everything that moves, or at least trying to, getting killed after 2 kills, but that is just how I roll.

Attack, almost always. Comes from a deep seated disgust for campers... If I can compare myself to them I have to go vomit.
I have to agree with the hatred of campers. Though I do prefer defense, I always make sure I dont slip into a corner unknowingly in order to defend said objective. Nothing in online gaming irritates me more than campers.

I have heavy weapons, tons of cover, and a stone wall between me and the enemy. Why would I give it up. Let them come to me. They will break on my defenses.
