I was talking today to some one who is a big fan of Call of Duty: Black Ops, and he admitted that he's never played the root of all FPS games (Ok, ok, I know Wolfenstein 3D was the original FPS, but I don't feel like counting that). My question to all of you, have you played Doom or Doom 2, and if yes, what did you think of it? Did you play it just a little, or did you play through a full episode?

The fact of the matter is, the guy I was talking about was a toddler when Doom was popular. The earliest FPS games he played was on the PS2. I've been gaming a long time, and I've gotten to watch the FPS genre evolve from infancy. I just want to know how many people who LOVE today's FPSs know what its roots are like, and what they think of the older iterations of the genre.

I played Modern Warfare 2 a bit.
I also played Doom and thought 'Wow. The genre's come a long way since then.'

Bored the hell out of me.

I still have Wolfenstein and DOOM.

I don't play CoD much, but I still have a lot of old FPS like DOOM, Dark Forces, and DF II.

Yes, I've played all 3 dooms.

They were okay, I guess. Somewhat complex level layout for 1, and 3 was way too dark.

I was too young to play it when it came out (just a kid), but I have played the entire Doom 2 game and thought it was great.

It was a time where we didn't have to look up or jump.

I owned and played Wolfenstein 3D when I was a youngin. My Dad got it for me and he had to show me how to type in the command lines in Dos to bring the game up. I remember always showing that game to my friends when they came over because I thought it was so bad ass that it said 17+ on the first loading screen.

I've played Black Ops but I didn't care for it. I'm not a big FPS guy to be honest, I don't like the visual perspective of 1st person.

Loved Doom, liked Doom 2 and Unreal, but my favorite will always be Wolfenstein 3D! Played a ton of Marathon multi-player also. But after Duke Nukem I pretty much fell away from shooters as a whole. Just got boring to me (for the most part.)

I've played Wolf 3d, but not Doom.
It was interesting as a bit of a history lesson, but it wasn't oodles of fun by today's standards.

I played Doom 1/2 when I was around eight years old. My dad and I used to play it on system link, which was awesome. Doom games were obviously fantastic for their time, but replaying them now makes you appreciate how far the FPS genre has evolved since then. Not that they're now unfun to play though.

As to question behind this topic - whether people should have a knowledge of older, influential games when playing current titles - I don't think it matters all that much. Not that I'm accusing you of this TC, but the sentiment of "LOL this guy loves CoD but hasn't even played the 'classics'" is pretty elitist and generally unhelpful. While in a scholarly sense it's useful in understanding how genres have evolved over the years, when it comes to having fun and having a great experience with a video game, knowledge of the classics becomes no more than an idle fancy.

not flaming just saying there was more than 3 =] theres was doom, doom2, final doom, and then doom 3/expansion pack .
much love x

but on poll topic, yes i love doom, doom through to final doom were quite freaky, but doom3 was just a jump fest, and am i the only one who freaked out at the commando that runs at you when you exit the tram ?

I bought the id Super Pack on Steam, got Doom 1 and 2 in Risen 3D just so that they run better. Playing through Doom 3 and I can tell you that the Lost Souls are as annoying as ever.

Also tried to play through Wolfenstein 3D on PS3, I can complete every odd-numbered episode, the even-numbered ones are either too difficult (can't get past the first level in episode 2) or I'm completely lost. However, Mecha-Hitler is one of the most awesome bosses ever created.

Yes, I played Doom long before Call of Duty even existed and in all honesty I prefer Doom to CoD, don't get me wrong I love CoD 1-3 and MW 1 & 2 but Doom was my childhood, that and the soundtrack for the first 2 Doom games was insanely good, didn't enjoy Doom 3 though, just didn't seem as fun to me.

I've played a few levels of the first Doom but never any of Doom 2. I had a Genesis as a kid so I played Zero Tolerance instead (which was pretty awesome).

I think Doom is fun, but I'm glad that FPSs have progressed beyond that.
