I have noticed, during my time here (and elsewhere), that the "attention whore" is now one of the most reviled creatures on earth. I see it crop up time and time again. Some lad or lady is found guilty of seeking attention, and the mob rises up to give them the savaging their transgression merits. If folks were given a choice between Ted Bundy and an attention whore as a roommate, they'd have to sit down with an extensive list of pros and cons before coming to a conclusion.

When did this happen? When did "seeking attention" become an unbearable crime? Isn't a craving for attention a sign of insecurity? Shouldn't a community of self styled nerds and outcasts be particularly sensitive to this kind of vulnerability, instead of particularly scornful? To say nothing of the fact that dwelling on an internet forum and spouting your opinions into the void in hopes of a reply is a form of attention seeking in and of itself.

What makes someone an "attention whore"? Is it bad to want attention? How much is too much? What if you merit attention? What merits attention? Say someone was attractive, or could do a thing. And they were all..."Look at me, I am attractive...I can do this thing". Would you be like..."Pfft, look at this piece of shit over here, attention whoring"? If so, why? What about it bothers you?

I realize that we live in an age of reality television and youtube, and that everyone wants their 15 minutes, and that some of those people will legitimately have nothing interesting to do or say. I just don't understand why it's bad. What's bad, exactly? That they're trying? That they're distracting you from your more important pursuits, like your doctorate, or that opera you are trying to write? What is it that bugs you so?

Eh; I've never been bothered by attention whores considering I'm a self-proclaimed Escapist attention whore since I generally will not post unless I'm near the top of the first page since no one sees it past then...

PAY ATTENTION TO ME!!!

In fact, the only time it does bug me is if they're being annoying in real life. Like...hmmm....I need to think of a good example here...

JOIN MY GROUP!!!!

Oh! Someone who wants to show you something but doesn't realize you're busy. I promise I'll come look at your stupid XCOM Group later but I'm busy right now. You coming up to me every two minutes to see if I'm ready to see your stories is not going to get me to finish what I'm doing any faster.

WANNA SEE THE PICTURE I DREW!!!?

Anyway, to end this sham of a post, I have no problem with people who want attention as long as you're not being annoying about it like a certain poster who won't shut up about his fucking XCOM group...

IT'S A FUN GROUP! YOU SHOULD JOIN IT!!!!

Since you're clamoring for attention, why on earth haven't I been on the last two missions? And what advanced class did I end up getting? And why haven't you played more JA2? I demand answers, Tippy!

Well the first answer is that I'm trying to get everyone leveled up at once before anything big and scary comes to completely curb stomp a group of soldiers. I've got fifteen members of the group enlisted and can't get the "more people in your squad" thingy yet. You are a sniper btw (it's on the Home page of the group). Plus I think you got shot in that mission...actually...come to think of it, I can't get a officer school without someone becoming an officer....well shit, I should have thought of that a while ago...

Also, this teleportation shit by the aliens are really slowing it down. I've had two soldiers that were not given over to the group because they were killed by teleporting aliens. It's really killing the speed since I SHOULD be looped back around this mission but won't be now :(

As to JA2...I kind of got bored with it really quickly. I tried to get into it, I swear I did! I just couldn't. I think my modern gaming habit has melted my brain and now I'm too impatient.

Yes it does bother me espeically the ones in a group chat. To me they are the ones who say hello in a chat but get bother enough when no one reply to him/ her and it's the same when the person is bother that no one is commenting on his/ her opinion.
In saying so I never been the one who seek the attention as I hate to be the center of it.

I'd say most of the Western super heroes are a bit of attention whores, making a damn show out of everything they do, and being portrayed as if we're supposed to appreciate them for how fabulous they are, much more than for what they're actually doing, or something.

The worst thing about attention whores are the people who think that they're special little snowflakes who deserve attention simply by being themselves. They haven't done anything, yet for some reason they believe they're god's gift to the world and everyone needs to know how fucking important they are. Those are the kind of people I hate.

If you have actually done something of merit and seek attention for it then that's fine. What gets me are the people who seek attention for doing absolutely nothing.

"Look, I ate a hotdog, but before I ate the hotdog I took a picture of it, instagramed it, and put it on facebook. Look how unique and impressive I am all you plebeians. You've probably never even SEEN a hotdog in person!"

There's a difference between those seeking attention and attention whores in my opinion. The difference is:

Attention seeker: Your friend walks up to you and says that she is feeling depressed because she feel like she is just alone and that no one takes the time to pay any attention to her. She has a legitimate problem, was direct about it, and even though she obviously wants attention, she's not trying to milk it from you.

Attention whore: Friend walks up, sits down next to you, slumps over and lets out a giant sigh. You ask her what's wrong. She replies with "nothing," then grumbles extremely loudly to herself, then leans on you. When you decide to not pry anymore, she continues to try and act like you are trying to get it out of her, until she finally tells you. Or anyone on facebook that posts a massive amount of passive aggressive statuses about other people. Both scenarios get my point across.

At the end of the day, the ones that clearly would like some attention, but are straight forward about it I'm perfectly fine with. However, the ones that milk others for the attention and manipulate their friends into paying attention to them, those are the ones that deserve the term attention whore.

Also, I'm assuming you neutral part of the poll was in response to the guy who has no stance on gay marriage. Congratulations on your passive aggressive response.

I don't really get it, but then I am a bit of an attention whore myself sometimes. Just not enough Fappy to go around it seems.

I'll tell you what I can't stand. Folks, who post on social networks "Grrr...so mad" then someone asks "What's wrong?"
Of course their response is "Too angry to tell u about it"

Then why in the fuck did post that?!

I know exactly why.
Attention and sympathy.
Ah yes, I believe there's a name for that - "vaguebooking".
And holy shit is it annoying.

Yeah I don't have a problem with people seeking attention, so long as they have a good reason to be noticed. But a lot of the examples people have given above are the kind of things that annoy the hell outta me. Not a fan of the attention whore.

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Was this even directed at me?

My this is relevant to me. I just blocked the newsfeed from one of my friends on Facebook who I can only describe as one such attention whore. Her schtick? Whenever she watches a new episode of her favorite shows (Walking Dead, Supernatural, etc.), she will post her reaction at every scene as she experiences them. This leads to nothing else on my feed except for upwards of twenty or so two-to-six-word status updates with no context of what's going on nor any real point for that matter. It's a fucking color commentary on Facebook.

Examples of what my newsfeed is comprised of during this hour of whoring:

"why Dean could never have a daughter"
"YOU DICKHOLE"
"DONT YOU TALK SHIT ON BOBBY"
"they aint no dream team"
"yoU BASTARD!"
"it's complicated?! how is it complicated?!"
"I've known this plot line 5 mins in!"
"(I am Dean it hurts)"
"that was clever you little *****"
"old?! ughh >.>"

And it goes on. I finally lost it today when I went to check Facebook for a spell only to see a wall of her posts in my newsfeed. Well, no longer will it annoy me now that I've blocked her. We're still friends on Facebook (and in real life :p), but that doesn't mean I have to be her fucking audience and put up with this kind of bullshit.

I most certainly enjoy attention but I prefer people to give it to me without me doing something that has the primary objective of getting attention.

At the same time I despise people who fall under the "attention whore" umbrella. They are a very small minority but obviously due to their nature they are far more noticeable than many other demographics.

Yes, they bother me greatly. Why? Two reasons: they're invasive and/or disingenuous.

Someone updating their blog or Youtube or whatever isn't attention whoring itself, but becomes so when they then go out and spam it to people that don't give a shit for the sole purpose of being noticed, or when they mislead people in order to grab their attention (sometimes this can be done ok-ish). Spamming is like throwing a tantrum - even if they might be interested in your point the delivery is a fucking annoyance, and people that resort to it just to get noticed are shameful.

On being disingenuous, there are two Youtubers that do this - one I despise, the other I'm kind of ok with. They are Zoomin Games and Minxy. Zoomin Games will ALWAYS have boobs in the thumbnail, even when the video doesn't show or mention them (which is most of the time). This is a deceptive move that makes the viewer feel cheated. Minxy's thumbnails will also ALWAYS have boobs, and she'll hang them out there with the high-angle shot the whole video. She's using her boobs to draw in viewers and educate them on Japanese, which is something she obviously cares about doing. She knows 90+% or her audience are only there to see her tits, but if a few of them walk away knowing one more Japanese word she's accomplished her goal, so good for her. It may lack a little integrity, but she's delivering exactly what she advertises and people walk away happy. It's a less sleazy marketing ploy than spam.

Vaguebooking is also the worst.
