The problem I have with people having a problem with attention whores (slightly convoluted sentence, sorry) is that people often brand a person an 'attention whore' for occasional misdemeanours.
The way some people have described the term in this thread does make attention whores sound like dirt, but unfortunately it means that someone who gets called an attention whore because they have a tendency to fish for compliments or they don't know how to deal with having a shitty time so express it through passive aggressive Facebook statuses now and then or something along those lines gets that same amount of vicious hatred levelled at them.
Eh, it's a general human fault, I find, that people often assume that if someone's done something kind of annoying that must mean that they're rude or self centred and couldn't possibly be because they're just awkward or insecure.
