It depends entirely on how one defines "attention whore".

I can't stand the kind of people who go out and be obnoxious specifically so that everyone will pay attention to them, but that's mostly because they're obnoxious. I don't have any particular problem with people who want to be the center of attention. All the more power to them, I certainly don't. But if they're a dick about it, I will respond in kind.

In short, don't be a dick and you can attention whore all you want.

I'm a boar. Boars don't need beds. It's part of what makes us so damn sexy.

Edit: Changing my avatar. From now on I shall be sex appeal incarnate!

Double-edit: Greetings, time traveler from the future! Fancy seeing you around these parts. When originally making this post, I changed my avatar to the aforementioned boar photo. Asuka came later. Sorry, NGE fans, but no anime character can compare to the real me's porcine magnetism.

Eh, stuff like vaguebooking and whatever does kind of rub me the wrong way, but I manage to ignore that kind of thing pretty well, so no problem there.

As to attention whores, I have no real problem with them (just don't pay attention) unless it's just plain obvious they're only doing it for some meagre amount of self worth judged from getting people to take about 5 seconds or whatever to make some flippant comment. I'm an insecure person meself, and while it may be because I'm an asocial bastard with the friendship skills of a giant spider hanging about near a drain, but I've never felt the need to gratify myself by trying to get people to pay attention to me.
I just gnaw myself to death with doubt. :) Much healthier.

I dunno, the term `attention whore` for me is too often misused (misused to mean `woman talking about nerdy thing she likes`).

And really, who gives a shit if someone does want attention?
If you don't want to give it to them, you don't have to.
So... gonna give the whole issue a big fat `meh`.

I'll tell you what I can't stand. Folks, who post on social networks "Grrr...so mad" then someone asks "What's wrong?"
Of course their response is "Too angry to tell u about it"

Then why in the fuck did you post that?!

I know exactly why.
Attention and sympathy.
It's people like that who are the reason why checking my facebook, and sharpening my machete are two activities that tend to occur simultaneously.

OT: In my experience, the sort of people who clearly would love fame (doesn't matter what for, as long as it's fame) and try to act like they're famous (facebook famous people need to be executed) are exactly the sort of people who would use their fame to prostitute every aspect of their private lives and create as much drama for yet more attention.

And it's that sort of endless cycle I envision whenever someone clearly attention whores over facebook. It's like... given a market, this person would be interviewing about their top ten fucks to OK magazine. THESE people are the role models we are leaving for the next generation!

Yep. Vain people infuriate me... I'm going to calm down now...

I hate the term, but I have no problem with the concept.

As you say, if you are posting on the internet, you want attention. That means we are ALL attention whores (except for the professional Lurkers), in which case the term loses meaning.

But I mostly hate it because it is mostly leveled at women. Even in the examples being given in this thread, I keep seeing "she" does this or "she does that.

If not wanting to be mistaken for a man just because I'm a female gamer (and on the internet) makes me an 'attention whore' then I think some people need to examine their sexist self-congratulatory bullshit and get the fuck over themselves.

It's a stupid term for reasons that you, BloatedGuppy, explained. And that Jim Sterling also explained. Jim was talking about Booth Babes and 'fake' gamer girls, but really 'attention whore' is just subtext for 'fake gamer girl' anyway.

Edit: The point I was laboriously trying to make it this: the term 'attention whore' is sexist bullshit and people should stop whining about it.

-that.

I know it's fucked up, but those are the most annoying personality traits another human being can have. Hate is probably too strong a word, but I do actively avoid such people. I certainly avoid doing their work for them. Learned that one young.

I'm an attention whore! I admit it, I crave attention, it's who I am. I don't want my 15 minutes of fame, no, I want my50 years of fame! I write, I want to act, I want people to see me on the street and whisper "Oh my god, is that him? From that thing? I love him!" I wear bright shirts, gel my hair, crack jokes and act really nice and polite to everyone so they'll notice me and remember me! I'm insecure as all hell! The best moment in the past 2 months is when I died as Mercutio while reading it in school and got applauded. I'm not ashamed, it's who I am...

I am aware, yes, that it is most frequently leveled at women. It's not an entirely gendered insult, but it seems to be a preferred go-to for women who have the audacity to do something unforgivable, like look pretty on camera, or admit they have a vagina in a gamer space.

That said, I wasn't really looking to make a sexism thread, and I'm sort of baffled by its application be the target man or woman. And after reading through this thread I'm more confused and alarmed than ever at the concentrated hate with which we view attention seekers.

Except vague-booking. That should be punishable by death.

PS - You chose "attractive boar" in the poll, didn't you? Everyone did.

I'm neutral. I have my attention-whoring tendencies, but they can be decently grating fairly often.

I'll be damned if they aren't successful, though, seeing that...

Of course it has a cat in it! You might as well have said it better be a drawing silly pants!

The kitty in this piece represents the destruction of Earth as mankind slowly but surely poisons the world with it's consumerism. The fire represents our destructive nature. The empty sky represents our bankrupted morality. The kitty is happy because she is the destroyer of worlds. The smiley face is just a smiley face; enjoy him :D

Hooray! Feed the attention whore (that's me in case I haven't made myself clear) your attention!

Alright, a bit back on topic: I always thought that "vague-booking" (someone really hot putting a "I'm so fat" status update on their profile to get free compliments or the earlier mentioned "Grrr...I'm so angry!" status update) wasn't a real thing...that it was just a joke comedians go to...

But I suppose that doesn't really change my earlier answer since I can still successfully ignore these people.

Also, I'm assuming you neutral part of the poll was in response to the guy who has no stance on gay marriage. Congratulations on your passive aggressive response.
I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Was this even directed at me?

Vague booking? I didn't read much of the thread (as it filled me with rage) so I am unaware of what that is.

Actually, no. I selected "I am an attention whore" because, as I noted, by any reasonable definition of the word, we all are attention whores.

OH. Posting vague shit. I see.

I don't really see that as attention seeking - just massively passive aggressive. Would it be any less attention seeking if they actually posted a reply instead of the inane "grr, too angry"?

Alternatively, the reason for the "grr, too angry" might be that they fear what the person who pissed them off will read. So while they really WANT to post about it, they don't want to burn bridges. I'll admit, this is the less likely scenario if they posted the first part, but I could see someone posting the first bit and then realizing their mistake (as they calmed down a little) and fearing to say more.

Of course, I might be overthinking this. ^^;;

Depends on the level of attention whoring going on. If it's someone that will do anything for attention even when they should sit down, shut up and pay attention to somebody else for a while, that's when I have problem. If it's someone that merely likes attention but knows when it's time to be quiet then I'm quite happy to let them do what they wish to earn my attention. Unless I have something to say or am doing something I hate being the centre of attention so I like having other people around to draw the attention away from me. If I want someone in particulars attention I tend to be quite good at getting it and then just spin off into a little 1 on 1 conversation where I feel more comfortable.

I find it funny how a huge majority of people dislike attention whores, but when it comes to "fake gamer girls" it seems a lot more even, when fake gamer girls are often nothing but attention whores. I'm surprised to see no-one see "it doesn't affect you directly, so why should you care?"

Yes attention whores annoy me, but I also pity them, perhaps more so. To be that insecure that they constantly need reminding that people are paying attention to them. Sounds lonely.
