I thought it basically set the benchmark for how 3D should be done nowadays. If Transformers 2 can make that much money, then I'm not surprised at all that Avatar is as successful as it is.

Very surprised. I knew it would do at least good or quite good, but I didn't expect it to do that good.

Its not surprising in the least bit. A lot of people want to see it and a lot of people went to see it. People are still seeing it. Not surprising at all to be honest.

the story is original and well done.
I agree with the well done portion, but original? Its a pretty basic, well-worn storyline: army person sent in, captured by the enemy. Learns much about the culture, essentially becomes one of them. Eventually falls in love with someone and defends the former enemy against their former comrades, who use intel that they provided them to try to destroy them. Dances with Wolves, The Last Samurai, etc. The biggest difference here is that its just on another planet.

Not to say that it wasn't an incredible film, definitely the best one in my opinion to utilize that storyline. But original, definitely not.

On Topic:

Nope, not surprised at all.

It's a James Cameron movie with a huge budget. Of course I'm not surprised, as soon as I heard about it I knew it would top Titanic.

I think the more appropriate title for Avatar would be Titanic 2 The James Cameron Cash In.
And then the sequel to avatar will be.

Avatar 2: return to fern gully.

Followed by Avatar 3: The Quest For More Money.

It's a good movie with a bad script... But that's all that's really bad. Everything else is good, even the actual acting. Seems to me the actors realized they couldn't say those sorts of horrible lines without looking like idiots, so rolled with it and took their acting to whole new levels of self-parody. The grizzled army vet, slimy corporate pencil-pusher and tough female marine characters were particularly hilarious.

It's like Starship Troopers. Except I had fun with this one. And it actually has good special effects. And it isn't crap.

It makes perfect sense if you look at trends in movies over the past few years. Except for the occasional masterpiece (Dark Knight), action movies have largely reverted to pre-Die Hard explosion fests with poor CGI, derivative music, and WWE stars who, as it turns out, aren't the best actors in the world (who knew?). Add to this all the aping of actually good filmmaking techniques (the Wachowskis' bullet-time, Paul Greengrass' and Christopher Nolan's use of the shaky cam) by hacks like Michael Bay, Roland Emmerich and a long list of others whose names you'll probably never hear again, and the result is an audience that hasn't been visiting theaters as much lately FOR A REASON. More than anything else, Avatar was a phenomenon of one of the big boys returning to show us how it's done.

Also, word of mouth spread like wildfire, and the overwhelming majority of the films detractors (ESPECIALLY on the Escapist) haven't even seen the film (use the search bar, you trolls!).

The sheer fact that it has the highest budget ever for a film is reason enough to go see. That's what attracted me to it.

Overall, the terrible plot ruined one of the most beautiful movies ever made.

I refuse to be part of James Cameron's money machine.
Which is ironic, as most consider this a movie about not being a greedy human...

I laugh out loud.

That reminds me. They still haven't made Spaceballs 2: The search for more money.

No grey zone in your poll I see.

I guess I could've expected it - Titanic grossed billions too.
