I enjoyed it. I don't mind cliches or anything like that since I don't think any story can ever be truly original. What matters is execution and Avatar was executed brilliantly.

Here's the thing, i wholeheartedly take in all opinions saying it was good for all kinds of reasons, i see the negative opinions making valid points as well. But here's my two cents.
Trying not to repeat anything already said, I just have one little tiny, little, micro, minor niggle..... here goes....
How exactly did this movie require 14 years and all that money where other movies have done similar concepts (the na'vi's ability to sync with other creatures and plants being the only truly unique idea in my opinion), similar motion capture quality, similar CG quality and similar plot concepts while being able to fit them in a movie half the length of Avatar. Dont get me wrong, it's awesome as a 3d movie and its darn pretty. But i couldn't help but feel wronged as all that seemed to be going on was James Cameron masturbating in my face for 3 hours, all in order to justify the ridiculous budget and 14 year planning session. The reason for the wait being that the tech didn't exist to satisfy his magnum opus.
I honestly believe that the money and time (or even half of it) could have been used to make a proper Terminator sequel. It was his baby after all. And he gave the Predator mandibles. I thank the man for those great gifts, but now i have lost respect for him.

I'm actually amused... I was just watching The Colbert Report's review of Avatar and laughing.
I haven't actually seen the movie, and don't plan to. It's not a groundbreaking achievement of any sort, it's just James Cameron saying "look what I can do!"

I think that more super expensive films are going to try to contest this film, making more entertaining movies. If you can't tell, I liked Avatar a lot... But nothing can beat good old Lord of the Rings Trilogy... nothing. Ever.
It seems that only a while ago all the internet could talk about was more originality and less hype. However, people seem more than willing to ignore that now. In 20 years, when these graphis are no longer special, nobody will remember this movie.
I wont even get into the black and white morality or just how many things got handwaved to make the plot work. Meh it was an alright movie. From all the hype I expected ALOT more. There wasnt really anything I can really pick on it was an alright movie. I didnt really see the big deal it was just another Humans are destructive and We are F***ing up the earth... funny because if that was the point of your movie, then WALLE beat you to it and did a much better job.
Actually Im being a little unfair. Avatar have the awesome potential to be a really good movie. The green theme and the man vs nature conflict had great potential. Unfortunatly they messed up in making the theme a little to obvious and preachy. The story was too one sided. It made humans the terriable bad guys and the blue people the flawless good guys. and the the whole I m going to betray my entire race on a spur of the moment was a little poorly done. That could have used a little more development.
Avatar had some good moments in the begining, whent he crippled Marine Sully is put into the Avatar and is able to use his legs again was a truly epic moment. However its too bad there were not more of these moments in the movie.
I think Avatar would have been better off as a video game similar to that of what Heavy Rain will be... a sort of interactive movie. All the flaws that make it an alright movie would have made a great sandbox game.
As for the CG. WE KNOW YOU CAN MAKE AWESOMELY REALISTIC THINGS NOW WRITE A DAM STORY!!! So far Beowulf = sucked, Star Wars Clone Wars = Really sucks, Avatar = ok we've past sucked and hit mediocrity, so I guess there is norwhere to go but up.

See, that's what im trying to say, CG is good, CG in 3D is better, but other than that the only good parts are the above mentioned scene of Sully getting to walk again and the main concept of Space marines vs Naturists. Nothing else about the movie really made me sit on the edge of my seat, cause i could see all the main plot points coming a mile off. When Sully goes after the big bad ass dragon/griffin thing of legend, when the na'vi home gets burned down, when he gets it on with the girl and then gets found out to be a traitor causes awkwardness so on so forth. It isnt as much fun if the audience knows whats happening an hour before the event has occured. Fair enough a lot of movies end up doing that nowadays, but Avatar telegraphs it so much it would have been more subtle to read the script as it was displayed in neon signs above the screen.UnlimitedCreativity said:

I suffered from Avatar depression for about 12 hours after I saw the movie. That should tell you how awesome I thought it was (ok, not the plot, but the world itself blew me away).
This and anything relating to trying to convince someone why something is good when they didnt like it is a trap, there is no way to convince someone to like something if they hate it to begin with being that its like fighting an uphill battle.

I thought it was alright, but it's a story which has been told before... and better.
A lot of the movie felt contrived and simply forced onto the reader. I am bad...because I am bad. 10 minutes later. Now, suddenly, I am good. It wasn't very convincing. But it was still enjoyable.

the reason it was so good, is because the CG was never in the way of the story.
Yes it was essentually 'Dances With Wolves' or 'The Last Samurai' or whatever in space, and in fact James Cameron put his hands up early last year and said that was pretty much the case. But It's a good story, competently told that just happens to be set in this mad fantasic sci-fi world.
It's like the antithesis of most Sci-Fi films that came out last year, they were all about the CG, and the specticale. Sitting through Termanator 4 or Transformers 2 or even District 9 (yes I was hugely dissapointed with District 9 and I'll be damned if any of you are going to try and convince me otherwise) there was just too much of the 'oooo, look at this realy pretty thing we spent ages on' and it didn't service the plot. Avatar could get away with that because this is the first time the main character is experiancing these things, and it was only ever for a breif moment, it was so well executed that it never got in the way of the ACTUAL STORY.
Personally I think it's his best Sci-Fi since Terminator 2 (yes, even better than The Abyss)
