I know that a lot of games have incredibly huge modding communities, but I personally have never really delved into such matters. Oh, sure, I've downloaded the occasional unofficial patch and I'm a blatant sucker for official DLC, but I've never touched another mod besides. Something about altering the game in such ways just feels... wrong to me. Fan-made gear? Isn't that effectively cheating your way to glory because the vanilla gear isn't "good enough"? Alternate appearance kits? They just look out of place. Sex mods? Don't even get me started.

I'm thinking of reinstalling Oblivion again and this time I think I might delve into the modding community... see if something makes the levelling system more intuitive... but in the meantime, I thought I'd ask if any of you feel, or have felt, the same way.

There are some games like Fallout 3 which were made to be modded. They add new life to the games after you played through it and can be extremely enjoyable.

I dislike many modifications. They often break the balance of a game to your favour. However, there are those mods that shine beyond others and can deliver like "the developers vision".

Did that make any sense? Hopefully.

I'm not sure what would be "wrong" about it, or what you really mean by it.
Mods are mods, if you want them then use them, or even make them, it is all to your personal preference.

I take from the old saying "nothing is perfect", so there is always room for improvement and mods allow you to do just that, after your own taste.

All the games I own that are moddable, are modded. I can't stand vanilla games.

But milkshakes and ice-cream are a completely different story...

As a primarily console gamer, i havent been able to mod most things. Stalker SoC and CS, yes, and i have, because the originals have major problems, so i download user made mods that fix and improve most of them

I think mods are great, until people figure out that that can make something naked.

Then it usually goes downhill from there. Like Fallout 3, you can mod FO3 to be fully animated interactive porn. That I think is too far.

But my general rule of thumb when I download mods, is if the mod still fits with the basic idea, and flow of the game. I'll try it out.

The problem with some mods is that it ruins the game. It's fun for a week or so, but then you lose interest in it, and the original game seems slow again.

I'm talking about those mods that give you godlike powers, or in some way make the game a lot quicker.

I see nothing wrong with mods. Adult oriented or not.
Everyone enjoys there games a different way, and mods help us customize our game to fit our needs more.

I love being a kajhiit in TES obivion. but sadly, theyer texuring kinda sucks, and no matter what, they always end up looking alittle ugly. Thanks to mods they look 10x better and have a more natural look.

Or maybe i like a certin style of weapon not in the game. Theres a mod for that.

Mods allow us more freedom to what we want. And with them, be can extend the replayability of our favorite games!

A sure sign you're using the wrong sort of mods :D

Most games I don't change from the vanilla/official patches/DLC, but if it's a good game with a good modding community that is suited to that sort of tinkering? I go for it. Sometimes even when it's not - I remember Morrowind and its stand-on-one-leg-and-lick-your-elbow load order magic. Those were the days.

There are many, many mods that don't break balance, and more that make it much harder on you. I wouldn't download a mod that is essentially a fan made cheat, but I'll download stuff like the Wanderers Edition of Fallout 3, or UI for TF2 and I'll play custom gametypes like Prophunt and Dodgeball in TF2/CSS.

You didn't mention additional content in your OP, and I can't see anyone having a problem with mods that add more quests and places to explore.

Nothing wrong with mods. Don't like it, don't use it. I personally don't like mods that overpower my character/imbalance the game, but I understand that people do, so more power to them.

Generally come in two flavours (really broadly speaking). Either extract them (using 7zip or whatever) and drop them into the game folders, or run the installer. Read the readme to find out exact details for specific mods.

i love mods that dont overpower the character but feel more like inprovements, like the reverse vamperism mod i have for oblivion, just makes it you get stronger as you drink now while starving yourself makes you weaker(the original version always seemed silly), im also impartial to adding cosmetic mods that make the game look pretty or add a balenced weapon that looks pretty

I dont like mods that make your character a god i mean why not just turn on godmode if you want that.

I have nothing against mods.

However, I don't use many of them. But that's not because I have anything against the idea of modding, rather, it's because most of them are crap.

While I'm not going to say Vanilla games are crap, I've certainly had a lot of enjoyment out of various mods for games. Take S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for example. There are mods out there that really do boost the enjoyment of the game and in the case of one of the lighting mods, increases the performance.

I also play IL2 1946 with the UltraPack Mod. I don't expect people to know or even care what that's about but it really does add some great features, like enhanced engine management, realistic flight models, better sounds and effects and mapping tools.

For those that are diametrically opposed to modding, I have to ask why? There are a lot of pros to modding. I know a lot of people think that modding a game is cheating, but if it makes the game more immersive, what more could you want?

Well, sometimes it feels like I play the game to death, which is perfectly valid, but then I end up wanting even more than the game can offer, so I end up bringing in a bunch of mods, which in the end just feel like there's something wrong and incongruous about the whole experience.
