The problem with some mods is that it ruins the game. It's fun for a week or so, but then you lose interest in it, and the original game seems slow again.
A sure sign you're using the wrong sort of mods :D

Most games I don't change from the vanilla/official patches/DLC, but if it's a good game with a good modding community that is suited to that sort of tinkering? I go for it. Sometimes even when it's not - I remember Morrowind and its stand-on-one-leg-and-lick-your-elbow load order magic. Those were the days.
I think you misunderstand me, I'm talking about things such as serverside mods, like in team-fortress 2 with the instaspawn mods. They just ruin the superb pacing of the game and render winning as a particular side rather difficult (Read: Near impossible).

The server browser is packed out with insta-spawn to the extent it's hard to find a good non-insta spawn server.

There are some mods which just ruin the game, insta-spawn on tf2 is one of them. Don't get me wrong, it can be really fun when you just feel like shooting stuff, but throw tactics and team based combat out of the window.

I like mods, but I can never figure out how to actually install them...

[sub]Not too bright I guess...[/sub]
Generally come in two flavours (really broadly speaking). Either extract them (using 7zip or whatever) and drop them into the game folders, or run the installer. Read the readme to find out exact details for specific mods.
Hey man, don't insult my intelligence!
[sub]It's just really really hard ok?[/sub]

Don't feel bad. I have problems with such matters as well. I wanted to install some bug fixes for Dragon Age but I apparently need to activate them through the console. Thing is, I don't understand the console at all and am worried that my efforts to do so would ultimately screw up the game. I ultimately decided to go "fuck this" and carried on with the playthrough bugs and all.
