I did try the "male version of own name" with my middle name, though. I won't give list the exact name here, since I've decided I really don't like it, but anyway, yeah, it didn't work for me.
God, I'd hate to be stuck with that (gender swapped first name) for me, because I hate my first name. Or, dislike it. Or don't like it. So gender swapping would just mean another version of a name I don't like.

(Also, I voted for Alex, but go with Duncan if your last name is MacLeod. Because that would be badass)
I haven't seen Highlander, but he seems pretty cool. Glad there are a few cool fictional Duncans out there.

Weirdly enough, I have more resonance with the name "Zachary" than my birth name, and it's not my real name, either. I mean, I don't know if this is particularly common, but who knows? If you changed your name, you might not feel so attached as you thought.

Maybe.
Actually, that's a pretty good point.

The internet and usernames have become really prominent over the last couple decades...hell, I do identify with Gryph and my old main WoW character (which is odd, since it's a girl's name...ha...haaa...I won't apologize for enjoying Night Elves) quite a bit, but certainly not more-so than my given name. There's a definite barrier between the real world and online interaction, so it's still got that uncanny, unreal feeling to its usage in real life situations, almost like they're different people being addressed.

I'm still attached to my name though. It's a part of my identity, after all, and changing it feels (muh feelz) like less of a wipe of the slate and more a denial of an accepted truth.

Not sure if that makes much sense either. I should really go to sleep.

Eh. It makes sense. I think you're just coming from a different place than I am. I've never been particularly attached to any of the baggage attached to my birth name. It probably shows in the way I write under a pen name, record under a stage name, and even answer to both. And my birth name. And my real name. And switch between them freely.

The Highlander series is hit or miss, but I'm still a fan both of the name and the character.

Also, half my family lineage comes from Scotland, and I have MacLeod predecessors (though not the right ones either for the family or the tartan used), I am totally freaking biased.

Uppity? Nonsense. Antoine is uppity. Julius is profound. And to those voting Alex, that name is far too commonly used in life. I have no idea about Declan. Wasn't aware it was a name.

Would you like if I post up more names that I believe are suitable?
Absolutely! Go ahead. At this point, I'm taking any and all suggestions into consideration.

If you need any character reference, I'm five foot six, can be described either as "happy go-lucky", "incredibly depressing" (I know that's not helpful with the last one, but I think both are true, oddly) or "intelligent" by my friends. I have an ironic sense of humour, tend to be pretty energetic and make a lot of hand gestures while talking. This is all a self-description, so obviously it might be tampered by bias. I'm a history major in uni. I do a lot of art in my spare time and talk about comics a lot. I have brown hair and olive/tan skin.
I appreciate the reference but I'm not clever enough to think of a perfectly suitable name to fit someones attributes.

Anyway, here are some: Corey, Jerry, Geoff & Mike

I'd say Julius is badass. I mean, I want to HAIL CEASAR just thinking of it.

Julian, on the other hand, makes me think....

Well, I never saw that movie, so it wouldn't have any bearing on me. What I have against Alex is A Clockwork Orange, myself.

Not that I mind Alex but the slightly more archaic version Alexander is in my mind even better since you basically get two names for the price of one.

How do you feel having a name that you feel isn't as perfect as it could've been?
I'm fine with it, since even before I changed it I was aware I'd almost certainly regret the choice.

runlr said:
Are you mostly over it, and totally comfortable now with the one you picked?
Yeppers.

runlr said:
Does it feel just as natural now as your birthname?
Actually, no. It feels even more natural. =)

runlr said:
Also, do you feel like the name 'grew on you' and you 'grew into the name' as you used it more?
Yeah. It's like a tattoo. One day you just take for granted that it's there.

OP, if you name yourself Alex, we'll share names

I wanna be name buddies :D

You could also use Alexander for a more masculine name as well (and who doesn't like being called Alexander the Great)

What's up with this apparent lack of public knowledge of the wonders of the name Declan/Deklan? It's a real name, you guys! It's pronounced Deck-len with stress on the 'deck'. It's a pretty normal name (albeit slightly uncommon) 'round these parts.

Haha my two best mates names are Alex and Declan xD they are both really good names although thinking about it now I am preferring Duncan. It's a strong masculine name and very Scottish :p.

Personally, I would pick a name which meaning is based on my character. Which is one of the reasons why I despise my name given at birth so much.

Outside that, Alex sounds like a great name.

After reading an very interesting webcomic, I personally can no longer take the name "Declan" seriously anymore...

But seriously, I say just go with your gut... As long you love being called by the name that you choose, nothing else matters...

Is it American Elf? Because that's where I learned of the name.

If you mean his first name, then you might wanna avoid asking about that, since, well...

Nope... It was another webcomic that's currently working on its "second part" right now... *squee*

Alex is my favourite of those. Julius is a little old-fashioned (no insult intended to any Julii out there).
