Wet and Oblivion had bad voice acting, but they were both pretty good, especially Oblivion. If it's a good game, and bad voice acting is it's only flaw, i'll still buy.
I found Oblivion's voice acting pretty good, actually (except for Lynda Carter's, obviously...and the guy who did the Bretons). It was only the way it was edited together that made it sound silly, once you realised all characters were repeating the same lines. If each character had been given their own unique dialogue, a la Fallout 3, it would have worked fine. The rumours were the feature that kind of ruined the voice acting in the game.

That's what you get for using completely amateur voice actors. No kidding. From what I read the voice actors were friends and family of the company's CEO.

Not video game voice acting, but in teen titans the show, Madame Rouge was painful to listen to. She couldn't decide between french, russian or yiddish accents. XP

There have been many horrible voice actors over the years... last game I played where their were horrible voice acting AND horrible lines was... Star Ocean: New Hope, its as if their brains were rattled with a cucumber, it hurt to hear, but I kept hoping it would get better... which it didn't... /cry...

OK, let's face it. Voice acting has been existent in games for a long time. From what I remember even the first System Shock and Sam & Max: Hit the Road had voice acting (just in their cd versions).

It's been about 15 years since the release of both aforementioned games. And despite that, there are still voice acting "gems" around. Games that potentially rival the first Resident Evil, House of the Dead 2, the first Silent Hill, etc.

My question is: Have you played any game that had voice acting so bad you just stopped playing it for a while or completely? Or did you just mute the voices? Or you just didn't bother?

For me it would have to be the introduction of the Valkyrie Profile. It almost stopped me from progressing into the game. Thank god it doesn't have voice acting for all its dialogues.

P.s. For those of you who want to hear some of those "gems", here. [http://www.audioatrocities.com/]
Enchanted arms was pretty bad. I could handle the Ice Queen's horrible acting, and even the stereotypically transgendered male, but the main character, Atsuma... god everytime he opens his mouth, I want to murder him.
I just mute it when he's talking, it helps me stay sane.
Luckily I quite enjoyed the story and the gameplay.

It's terrible, but to be fair the "actors" didn't have a good script to work with. I think a lot of the problems with games translated from Japanese to English is the very lazy, literal-minded translation rather than voice acting.
Actually, Ncile and Shizuku weren't that awful, but the rest. Wtf!? who casted Uru?
He sounds gay and completely disinterested with the whole thing.
Off topic... what game was that?
-Edit-
Nevermind... i folowed OP's link. It was Chaos Wars.

I've never quit a game because of bad voice acting, but I've played games with it.

I think the worst I've played might be Baten Kaitos. Sometimes it's decent, but most of the time it's just bad.

"THIS WILL CLEANSE THE EVIL OUT OF YOU"

Oh, and now that I think about it, the HL2 mod "The Citizen" had really bad VA, too. Still, it's not like they could afford to pay actors so I'm willing to give it a pass.

No because the ones that usually do have bad voice acting you can turn to japanese, and that's what I do.

Then again...hmm. Sonic Heros was a combination of abysmal/annoying voice acting that was constant and wasn't something you can turn off with medicore gameplay. So yes I quit Sonic heroes because I couldn't get them to shut the hell up.
"Look at all those Eggmans robots!"
"Sonic if you throw me like I told you the last 50 times we played this level you can kill those bad guys!"

Haven't STOPPED a game, per say, but I've avoided some. Sonic's recent games come to mind--I wish they kept the old voice actors. Their performances weren't anything to write home about--at that stage I think we were all still just happy to HAVE voice acting in a console game--but they sucked just a bit less and had a somewhat better emotional range than the 4Kids actors. I can't blame them too much for any deficiencies at this--it's hard to take ANY dialog from a blue hedgehog seriously, and with Sonic it's difficult to tell where the bad writing ends and the bad voice acting begins.

Final Fantasy XIII I'm outright avoiding after hearing the dialogue in the trailers. Seriously, that stuff made me go from "I'm definitely getting this game no matter what anybody says" to "you couldn't friggin' pay me to play this game." I don't know if it's the terrible writing or the stock anime voice actors that put me off so much. They sound just like everybody else in every other anime-inspired game, and what's worse, their voices don't even match their faces. I don't mean their lips--I noticed they actually bothered re-synching their lips this time--I mean that their voices just don't seem to fit with their character designs. It's not the most jarring disconnect I've ever seen, but their designs are full of flair and personal touch but their voices are totally vapid, wooden, and devoid of personality or soul, like the actors just got bored with their job in the years of basically playing the same people in different series, went in there, read their lines as fast as they could, grabbed their checks, and left. As is often the case, games just inherently draw bad voice acting; everything is rushrushrush on the set of a game and the actors don't get as much room to work, but if anything Final Fantasy ought to be upholding a Miyazaki-esque standard for this sort of thing. You'd THINK that their connections with Disney would get them that far, but it's pretty clear that Square's more interested in pandering to its fans at this point than producing quality work and that their localization crew pretty much just phoned this one in and tried to get it over with fast. Ironic coming from a game with such a huge development time.

Dragon Quest VIII, I really did quit it because I can't stand the voice acting. Worst ever.

Sonic Heroes has terrible beyond words voice acting too but it didn't quite stop me. Somehow they managed to replace Tail's voice from the previous games with someone even more annoying (which would be damn hard) and every single new character they introduce has a voice that could crack glass (except big the cat who is annoying for other reasons).

I think the voice acting is half the reason I rate that Heros as worst Sonic game ever, although I haven't played any Sonic games since so maybe Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (PS3, 360) or Sonic Unleashed is worse.

I have played a few games with really bad voice acting, especially JRPGs because for some reason the people who localize them can never seem to afford anything but the worst possible voice actors. There are a few exceptions like the tales series and final fantasy where they can be just tolerable but that's about as good as it gets. I did have to switch Eternal Sonata to the Japanese language track because the English was so atrocious but having to switch between the Japanese dialog and english text (no Japanese option) is confusing and gives me a headache fairly quickly.

I'm currently Playing Star Ocean the Last Hope, which is preitty damn bad too but at least the combat is good enough that I can put up with an idiotic sounding main character and his shrill "childhood friend who is secretly in love with him" sidekick.
