Bass players are almost always the member of the band who no-one remembers. Can anyone remember the main bassist for Queen's name? (without using google) Exactly.

But yeah I respect anyone who can play a musical instrument above the flute because I damn well can't.
John D....something?

Also the bass itself is needed in most stlyes of music (including stand-up i mean)

I'd say it's still a cousin, but it's a distant cousin. Similar concept, different implementation.
It's also tuned differently.
Like really differently.
(bass strings go up in straight 4ths, whereas guitars have the 3rd going from the G to B strings, creating a completely different sound and sets of chord positions)

Isn't it John Deacon?
Oh yeah I'm right!
WOOOOOO!

But, a lot more people know about bass players than keyboard players.
I mean, Queen's keyboard player isn't even on Wikipedia...

I play guitar, but primarily I'm a drummer. I know that the drums and the bass are the two most important parts of a band, but somehow, they're also the two most overlooked. It sucks, but if you're devoted to your instrument you can get by with only a few punches to your arrogant lead singer's face. XD

I gotta have my base. A song without it just isn't finished without a good baseline. That is one of the reasons I like Faith No More so much.

Also Motley Crue would have never gotten to were to where they are today if not for Nikki Sixx.

Yes, bass is a separate instrument. It just doesn't sound different, but it has a different purpose and is often a very important part in keeping rhythm. Of course, my guitarist friends disagree, but I think their douches.

Dude of course! Just look at Victor Wooten, that guy is an artist.
He's OK, a bit too show-offy for my tastes, but he's good nonetheless.

Bass is it's own instrument. It's just not that well known.

Let me put it this way: how many Saxophone players do you know? How many French Horn players? How many players of the Didgeridoo?

A lot of people idolize guitarists, so they tend to be better known.

It is completely a different instrument. I would much rather learn to play bass than guitar, just because of the sound and different style. I really like the work of Ryan Martinie (of MudVayne) because he uses so many different techniques.

They are in the same group, diffrent instruments though. For the same reason I call a violin a entirely diffrent instrument from a viola

Well they have a different sound from one another but overall the only difference noticeable by the less musically oriented is that bass players get laid a lot less.

Sure, it's a different instrument. I play the bass, but can't even pick up a guitar, the same way most of the guitarists I know can play the guitar quite well, but can't even begin to make a bass sound good.

I have always been a bass player and I love the instrument, but to say it is very different than the guitar is just stupid. Just because the approach is different, doesn't discount that, other than the bass being lower, the structure and tuning for the two instruments is exactly the same. They even have the same methods for playing.

Using the bass as the lead only makes my point more clear. People like Peter Hook and John Entwistle understood the potential of the instrument. Both instruments can be used as the lead. When that happens, the only difference is amount of strings and lower tuning. And if a different amount of strings is really a problem, pick up a six string bass.
