Well all string instruments are cousins of each other really...

In any case the bass guitar is its own instrument and very important in 99% of contemporary music. Without bass a song sounds flat and lifeless and as part of the rhythm section of a band it's handy for helping the rest of them keep in time when it comes to playing live. Also more flexibility and strength in your hands is required to keep it from sounding

Awesome, and I agree that just because a person can play guitar does not automatically mean they can transpose those skills over to bass instantly. It's like saying just because someone is good at Call of Duty they'll automatically be good at Fallout 3 (without VATS).

I a bassit aswell and I would have to say that its its own intrument (I wanted to type weapon for some reason).

Both the original acustic bass and guitar dont really look all that much like the modern pure electric ones that are common now.

P.S. your poll options are a pain to read, I understand it but its just makes my cringe...

I play guitar, but primarily I'm a drummer. I know that the drums and the bass are the two most important parts of a band, but somehow, they're also the two most overlooked. It sucks, but if you're devoted to your instrument you can get by with only a few punches to your arrogant lead singer's face. XD
As a lead singer, I can honestly tell you that I believe the same bloody thing.

Bass and Drums are the most important parts of a badn because they set the back ground for everything(Least offensive way I know how to put it). A Solid bass line and complicated drumming are the canvas that alot of metal needs.

Also, I love a great bass solo.
Yeah, you can tell the quality of a band by the quality of their drummer. Like Travis Barker: He sucks, and so does blink-182. Keith Moon was one of the best drummers of all time, and The Who just pwnd.
I certainly need more The Who in my musical diet.

I find it ridiculous, though, how a lead singer and guitarist can overlook the importance of the bass and drums. It smakcs of musical incompetence, to me.
That's because it is. Most guitarists I've met have a drastically inflated ego. And don't even get me started with the singers. Maybe it's because we know we're not in it to make ourslves look good, but drummers and bassists tend to be nicer and not as much of an ass.

You don't have to be a fancy, in-your-face bassist to be a good one. It's definitely an instrument unto itself and any evidence to marginalize that fact is bred from lazy individuals who can't be arsed to learn how to play it properly.
