I'm just really not comfortable about the level of detail that Origin can monitor your computer at. Steam isn't quite that intrusive, and you can always decline the Hardware/Software Survey for Steam. I doubt you can do that with Origin.

I think the newly added 'I wasn't going to buy it anyway' option fits your description.
Much appreciated, though seems I'm in a minority.

You know what depresses me so much about BF3, is its lack of vision. It just seems to want to be a shiny BF2. I hate to say this but it looks like *Horror* Modern Warfare 3 is going to be a better game:
-hugely overhauled killstreak favouring assist type of players
-Very deep Perk options - almost true RPG like
-Actual server browser
-Steamworks
-More multiplayer game modes
-smaller but wider variety of maps
-Spec-ops mode looks like it has some good ideas
-and other crap like wider community engagement like youtube gun review, etc, etc

I know I feel like an utter philistine here, but that's just the way I see it. I'm not particularly crazy about MW3 but relative to BF3 it really is higher up there and I don't know how much of that is down to EA's snarky COD-baiting and beta-male posturing... but it certainly doesn't help.

But One thing I see with MW3 is a developer working under adversity, artificial adversity brought on by Activision (that I'm still quite mad about) but I have seen enough brilliance from adversity and failure from comfort to believe the former can bring good tidings. They really seem to be trying hard to make the best they can out of they hand they've got, and I have to admire that. Their focus is on the gameplay, the design, the balance. Yes.

Either way, I've kind of gone off modern shooters. Not that I want to go back to WWII. I want something more in the direction of steampunk or diseselpunk a la Bioshock or the upcoming Dishonored or even Prey 2 (more cyberpunk).

I really wish EA wasn't publicly traded, then they might be less annoying and might not pull so much crap.

I'm not even gunna start with you and other people that are so up in arms about Origin and how 'evil' EA is being.

Yes, I bought BF3 on Origin. Yes, you're missing out.
Well I hope for your sake you don't happen to have a no-cd patch from like, Sims 2: Pets from a half a decade ago hanging out anywhere on your system when EA decides to go all RIAA after a few months of their Origin datamine that YOU allowed them to do.

They gave me a 25% digi coupon for my birthday and was jonesin' for saboteur. Bought that and had purchased bf3 off of newegg for 15% off. Minor discounts, I know, but if they have deals just like steam, regardless of probing my computer, then cheers to them.

I want the game for pc, I guess I have to ante up. Whatever.

Sadly, I "gave in". I wasn't going to buy it because of Origin, but a few of my friends bought it, and we're gonna play some games together in a few weeks, BF3 being one of them, so I had to suck it up.

Let's just all get up and say what we think of Origin. It sucks. It clogs up a lot more resources than Steam when it's idle, it looks like crap and there seems to be a lot of excessive coding for what could have been more simple. Go back a few years and Steam was ugly and slow too. Origin is still in beta and will most likely improve. Steam has had years to perfect their features, Origin has been around for months. I still used Steam when it was new and I wont let Origin stop me from playing Battlefield 3. My education stops me from playing Battlefield 3, not a piece of software.

Man walks in to waste EA employee's time, walks out with a discount. Where is the justice?

OT: Many websites, apps and even steam get tons of access to my data, Origin isn't that much worse. And boycotting would make me lose out on ME3, and hell no to that.
Will respond to all 3 at once as there is a lot of overlap.

First where did I say EA are 'evil' in my post. Don't put words you have heard elsewhere in my mouth. I completely understand why they want would want to get these stats, and the purpose is not 'evil'.

But saying other places are doing this in the same way EA are with Origin is completely false. You want to tell me what these websites are that are collecting as much information as Origin without your permission (as that is the main issue here).

As I said above, they put in an opt out on supplying this data the same way Steam have, then I have no more particular problems with Origin.

Until then I will wait until there is a method of playing the game without needing Origin, before I buy.
What you hiding on your computer -_-

The way people bang on about it its as if they imagine EA have an entier division dedicated to watch the computers of every signle user... until a representative of EA turns up at my door i reserve the right to say its a stupid excuse to use. Apple for one track your location unless you have a particular service turned off which was only brought to light this year. Sony make you give up the right to sue them if you accecpt their T&C's... every company has something implimented into that long list that the majority of people are more then happy to just click accept on... besides im sure websites like facebook have more info available on the internet for anyone to see then Origin will EVER obtain for EA

Just signed up to post this, long time lurker on the escapist here :/

I downloaded Origin to play the beta and signed into my old EA account I created years ago on Xbox live which shares the same out of date log-in e-mail that my Xbox account does

Everything seemed OK until last Monday when I received a conformation on my current e-mail (linked to the account for conformation e-mails) for purchase of 5000 MS points, which was odd as i haven't been on Xbox live for about 2 months

Turns out I have been the victim of those Fifa Xbox live hackers and used the points purchased on my account to buy Fifa 12 and play it.

I phoned up Microsoft and got them to seize control of the account and I canceled my bank card that was linked to the account just to be sure. Microsoft are doing a fraud investigation and took all my details so everything being sorted and I will be getting a refund thankfully.

Whats this have to do with Origin? Well...

The help desk guy asked me if i had entered my details anywhere suspicious recently like phishing scams etc, Nope.avi, then he asked me if had a EA account... Ah...

Turns out I use both the same email log-in (no longer valid since switching internet service providers) and password for both accounts (which is stupid i know but i created them a long time ago). Since the e-mail I used there is out of date i don't use it obviously and the only place where I entered it in the last good few years or so was when I signed up/into origin.

So some how people are getting hold of EA account details, through EA or EA's lack of security, but hey I've learnt my lesson here with EA. never really had a problem with the company before but i always heard plenty of complaints about them in the past.

So no Battlefield 3 and no Origin for me thanks.

tl;dr->

EA sucks.

What stoped me from buying BF3 was my experance with BF2, got the in a steam sale a month or 2 back and every server I joined quoted a ping of ~50ms and when I joined the game it was 200-300ms, also the starter weapons felt useless compared to stuff i was picking up off higher level players.

When I heard it needed orgion I lost all intrest in BF3

I was going to buy this one, as soon as I heard about Origin I changed my mind.
Not because of this privacy business because, let's face it, there's not much privacy to be had these days.

I won't be buying it because I shouldn't be forced to install the shit just to play a game that I paid for, it's an unnecessary punch in the dick and I won't support it.

I'm tired of the Steam fanboys too.

Yes. Well, this AND Mass Effect 3. I won't be buying either until EA amends the EULA.
Not sure if serious..... you really don't know that they did amend it??

OT: Of course I bought the game, I wanted it, and I got it. Besides, they changed the EULA, now it intrudes on your privacy just as much as steam.

I'm not interested in Battlefield 3 to begin with, so no. I'm getting new shoes instead.
Though it does look like a great technical achievement, so props to my countrymen for that. Of course, EA postponed their vacations this summer to be sure to get it out the door today, so I hope the DICE crew get their time off after the initial patching.

I like using Steam. I can't exactly begrudge EA for wanting a piece of the DD pie, but honestly, military shooter in this vein are hardly a scarce commodity. I can buy MW3 at about the same time for a very similar experience, and keep things simple. And so, I have no reason to give EA my money. Put it on Steam, put one fewer barrier between me and the game, and Ill probably get it.
