Or, really, alcohol and religion; Can they be mixed? Ireland seems to think so. SHOULD they?
(by "mixed, I do'nt mean like getting hammered in the pews, just drinking in general for religious people. maybe having a beer while playing video games with Jesus. something like that.)

I'd rather get religious people, or at least people who were raised religious (and thus, know what it's like) opinions, but I welcome atheists' views as well.

I ask because
1)I'm religious. sort of.
(agnostic-christian; which essentially means I believe in Jesus with some uncertainty but I do'nt go to church or do any... religious things... if you must know)
2) I like alcohol
3) I thought this bit from Critical Miss was awesome: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/critical-miss/9091-Critical-Miss-The-GameChurch

I think they can be. but the way that you would have to drink while trying to avoid sinning... it may ruin the experience...
tell me what you think!

edit:
For those of you that do'nt know The Bible's actual take on alcohol (according to the christian canon, anyway) is not as negative as "contemporary organised religions'" is today (for the most part)

It has a negative stance against drunkenness, but not against drinking itself. It was shameful when Mosses got off the arc and got so slamered he passed out, but Jesus himself turned water into wine (and drank it).

I don't see why not. My parents, both Christians, enjoy a bit of wine or other alcoholic drinks every now and again. Most of the Christians I know aren't opposed to drinking. I myself am a Christian, and I don't see any problem with it.

I don't know I haven't read the bible so there is no legit argument I can bring. Can someone who does have the spare time to read such a book clear this up?

If your Christian there's no problem with drinking. Just drunkenness and gluttony. your fine if you don't overdo it.

Catholicism is the obvious answer:

Step 1: get hammered
Step 2: do whatever you want
Step 3: ????
Step 4: the confessional (profit)

Edit: besides Jesus didn't turn water into grape juice :D

Sure, my parents, or at least my mom, are religious, and they enjoy drinking.
I don't see any real problem with it, but im not religious so, yea.
Though, there's plenty of churches and such that aren't allowed to drink, dance, smoke, etc. Like Pentecostals, Salvation Army, Baptist, among plenty of others.

Well considering it was the monks that mainly brewed beer in the olden days I don't see why it wouldn't.

1. Jesus turned water into excellent wine to be served to people at a massive wedding party.

2. There's references to various godly people throughout the Bible where they're drinking, plus some deliciously scandalous verses in Song of Solomon where the "Beloved"'s various body parts are compared to a refreshing fine wine.

3. Proverbs states that "Wine is a mocker, beer is a brawler", things that typically happen when drunk.

4. It also says in Ephesians "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery".

Conclusion: Drinking is okay, getting drunk is not, according to Christianity.

only hard-line fundamentalists (like my grandparents) believe that all alcohol is evil, most people who actually read the bible instead of just quoting parts of it will tell you that drinking is not wrong, but getting way drunk is. But to be honest I have very little respect for people who get shit-faced on a regular basis and it has nothing to do with religion
side note: shouldn't this be in the R&P forums not off-topic?
EDIT: obviously i'm only referring to Christianity I don't know that much about other religions

Some flavors of Christianity don't allow alcohol consumption, notably Mormonism.

I don't think that means what you think it means. Agnostic believers have unwavering faith in their gods, they just believe that either they can't prove its existence or it can't be proved in general.

What you do is... well, i think most hardcore Christians would question you saying you are one and yet not doing any religious things, go to church or even being certain of Jesus.

Well, the part where you eat the 'host' used to (and still is in some denominations) include the body and blood. The preist takes the bread and breaks it saying 'this is the body of christ' then the same with a cup of wine 'this is the blood'. It's a symbolic thing, but it's taken from a recreation of sorts of the things jesus said/did at the last supper (allegedly, if you believe that sort of thing). Now it's just the little cracker 'body' part that you actually go up and eat, but it used to be that you ate the bread and drank of the cup.

Some churches still do this, but i've never seen actual wine, just juice. Wine was the tradition. There is also that story of the miracle where jesus turned water into wine. If he didn't want people drinking, why didn't he just leave it as water?

I'm pretty sure they are mostly against excess. As in getting stupid hammered would count as gluttony as far as i know.

Edit: I just wanted to point out that I am talking about Christianity and Catholicism here. I'm sure it was obvious, but just in case. I don't know enough about any other religions to speak on it.

Depends on the religion. Some religions actively forbid the consumption of alcohol, whereas others include it in their various ceremonies.

Drunken immorality doesn't go hand-in-hand with a religion which insists on the suppression of base urges. Christianity asks that you not live your life for physical pleasure, but that you live with some purpose. Getting drunk and cheating on your wife is a sin. Getting drunk and having a laugh with some close friends is not a sin.

Of course, religions in general are not always about the suppression of urges. Take the Bacchanalian sects of the Ancient Greek Religion. They got totally wasted and had drunken orgies, sometimes even to the point where women would tear a young man apart, killing him. Religion is simply a belief system regarding the existence and wishes of an unprovable, unknowable God or gods (or lack thereof). If you honestly believe that God wants you to get drunk and do whatever you please, then that's your religion and alcohol fits in perfectly with it.

TL;DR: I don't think Jesus is going to get upset if you have a beer.

Well, surely it depends on the religion? If you're a Christian then there's no issues, I think. If you're a Muslim then it's "haraam" (forbidden) to drink it.

Nonetheless, I imagine there would be many more religious people out there if worship came with free beer.

Depends on the denomination. Some, like Catholics condone drinking (not in extreme excess obviously), while others, like Baptists tend to frown heavily on it. I was raised by Baptist parents though, and they weren't teetotalers.
My view though, as a Protestant is that drinking is well and good, as long as you don't get totally wasted when you do it.
