I don't drink alcohol. The idea that alcohol is bad for you is way too ingrained in my brains. So no, I do not drink beer and I have no intentions of starting.
Awwww c'mon live a little, go get drunk ^^
It's fun, and as long as you don't do it to often you'll be fine
See, I always hear that kind of argument and I will never be able to understand it. Why would I need alcohol to "live" and "have fun"? I am doing that right now without it just fine. Infact, chances are that without alcohol, I might actually "live" and "have fun" longer then with it.
Besides, I am not inclined to drinking simply beacuse I am exposed everyday to the consenquences it quite oftenly tends to bring. I live in a country that has some of the highest automobile accident rates in Europe and the most prevalent reason for that is....you guessed it, overconsumption of alcohol. To add to that, my eldest brother has had an accident
three times precisely beacuse of drunk driving and he landed in the hospital twice for it. At this point, we can consider ourselves fortunate he is still alive and in one piece, beacuse many other similar stories tend to end much less favourably.
Do not misunderstand. I am well aware that one won't throw himself off the nearest bridge by merely touching alcohol with his lips. I am actually completely fine with alcohol in cuisine and I have even tasted various kinds of alcohol at various points of my life (although the result nearly always ended up with me either hating the taste or nearly choking to death).
But the thing is, people tend to overestimate their ability to "withstand" alcohol and underestimate it's intoxicating power. And since you can't "think straight" while intoxicated, it leads to unfortunate incidents, some which people either do not survive or bear the consenquences of for the rest of their lives.
I am not trying to tell people how to live their lives. If they want to drink and believe they can be rational about it, that is fine. I personally just find the potential consenquences too great to justify the risk and I don't want to ever find myself in a situation where I made an enormous mistake which I could have easily avoided if I was sober.
