I was forced to read any mystery book, and I ended up going with "The Theft Who Couldn't Sleep", a book about the life of a war veteran (but young) who suffers with insomnia due to an injury in war. He then spends his free nights learning over 30 languages, and eventually learns about a treasure hidden away in a European Country in the 20th century. Along the way he gets with a few hot girls. At one point he has a spanish friend who want to be a hairdresser. You know how games are good when they can smoothly include so many elements? Well that's what this book is like, only some of the changes are really, really sudden.

I've read most of these, but my all-time favourite was GRENDEL, by John Gardner. That probably says something about me, but I really don't care.

The only book I was forced to read that I utterly despised was the scarlet letter, too wordy for my taste. As for best Othello, techincally watched it with sub-titles in my english class, but it was amazing. Iago is just a great charcter with wicked ways that don't stop him from being funny. The man gives an aside whilist having sex. It has a tragic end but it's done so well. As for actually read, Farinheit 451 was rather enjoyable, a great story about censorship.

It was a great book though
Have you seen the movie based on that book? It is, by far, the best comedy I've ever seen. And the movie was made in...

*checks*

1970. Not a very recent movie. Honest-to-god, I loved it. Wouldn't change a thing about it if I could. The poor audio quality at parts? The ketchup style "blood stain" in one part? Those just add to it somehow.

It ignores parts of the book, and adds in it's own, yet you barely notice, because it's so well done. Joseph Heller (The author of the book) actually said he wished he'd included some of the dialouge that was added to the movie in the book.

TL;DR: Watch the movie "Catch-22".

Can't decide between Macbeth, Brave New World and Steppenwolf.
All three were great in their own way.

"Doctor Glas" by Hjalmar Söderberg or "Kallocain" by Karin Boye.

Best book I was forced to read in English class, though, was probably Bridget Jones' Diary. Seriously. At least it was up-front about its stupidity and boredom and complete lack of point, which is more than you can say about Things Fall Apart, I know why the caged bird sings or Angela's Ashes... grr...

To Kill A Mockingbird was the only one I read at school apart from my physics textbook. I am, however, reading 1984 at the moment and loving it.

1984 is awesome, but I read that out of choice. The best book I was ever forced to read was another Orwell novel, Animal Farm.

My Physics textbook really sucks, because it's centred on "context-based learning" rather than "giving-any-useful-information-based learning".

On The Beach and Brave New World. Both brilliant books, The second very thought-provoking.

Watchmen, however I read it the moment I got it outside of class and finished before the rest of the class started. I loved that teacher.

To Kill a Mockingbird, I remember hating being forced to read it but once I got in I was really engaged.

There are only 2 books I've been forced to read, twilight and the northern lights.

Between them I prefer the northern lights.
