Where have you been for the last 15 years? U2 are arguably the biggest band on the planet.Arrers said:EDIT: Oh yeah, and why did you put U2 in this poll? they're Irish (not a part of the UK) and how many people actually like U2? they never struck me as hugely popular.
As much as I love Iron Maiden, weren't they formed in 1975? Plus, you got to admit they don't have the widespread appeal of the others in the list. These bands on the list sort of sum up the British sound, which is exclusive to these isles, whereas you could say Iron Maiden go hand in hand with the 70's rockers of America.Indigo_Dingo said:Where the hell is Iron Maiden?
oh, I see. Me and my friends are the U2-Hating hipsters you described (with the execption of the cool part).Malygris said:Not to pick nits, but U2 has been one of the biggest bands in the world for decades, particularly following the 1983 release of War. They've won more Grammy awards than any other band in history and have sold something like 100 bazillion albums. In terms of music, U2 pretty much embodies popularity.Arrers said:EDIT: Oh yeah, and why did you put U2 in this poll? they're Irish (not a part of the UK) and how many people actually like U2? they never struck me as hugely popular.
The band has numerous enthusiastic detractors too, particularly among the young, musically-relevant hipster population who disdain anything with a following of more than 17 of the coolest people on the planet. But I find that very much like the criticism of people who deride World of Warcraft as a shitty game: Their problem isn't with the game so much as with the fact that something they're generally indifferent toward is so enormously popular.
But they are Irish, as you say, so yeah. Wrong list.
I think more people hate U2 now cause Bono is the epitome of doucheness, god I hate that guy!Malygris said:Not to pick nits, but U2 has been one of the biggest bands in the world for decades, particularly following the 1983 release of War. Also The Edge, there's somthing about a person calling himself "The Edge" that I find annoying.TheLoveRat said:I think more people hate U2 now cause Bono is the epitome of doucheness, god I hate that guy!Malygris said:Not to pick nits, but U2 has been one of the biggest bands in the world for decades, particularly following the 1983 release of War. Agreed Unknown Pleasures (their 2nd album kids) was released in 1979 and was the bands final album. By default they are a 1970's band and popular consus placess their influence there also.starrman said:1980 isn't long before the 80s....goater24 said:Ian Curtis was Dead long before the 80's dude, but New Order were around releasing 'Technique' a damn fine album.pigmonkey said:i vote joy division, holy crap i think i've mentioned that band at least 5 times on this forum already.
Anyway, the thing about Joy Division is that they only released 2 albums and it's likely that their popularity grew after the had disbanded. I think New Order were more influential to the future music scene and whilst I like Joy Division a great deal I don't think they should be an such a list. Mind you, neither should Oasis or U2, but that's just IMO.
