Iron Maiden.
Also, although Iron Maiden are not on the list it puts me in a happy place to see no escapists have voted for coldplay.

^ U2 aren't British.

The bands in this list just seem to be bands that NME/Radio 1 wet themselves over not really a mixed selection. Apart from Muse and early Oasis that list is a bit meh so I'll go for Other and say....hmmm....can't really decide so I'll stick another vote on for The Prodigy as I can't stop listening to their new album at the moment.

i vote joy division, holy crap i think i've mentioned that band at least 5 times on this forum already.
Ian Curtis was Dead long before the 80's dude, but New Order were around releasing 'Technique' a damn fine album.
1980 isn't long before the 80s....

Anyway, the thing about Joy Division is that they only released 2 albums and it's likely that their popularity grew after the had disbanded. I think New Order were more influential to the future music scene and whilst I like Joy Division a great deal I don't think they should be an such a list. Mind you, neither should Oasis or U2, but that's just IMO.

Well, neither Maiden nor Priest qualify for the poll since they both were founded in 1975 and 1969 repectively.

With that said, I hereby encourage everyone to don't give a shit about my previous statement.

Iron Maiden and Judas Priest rule!

You can't pick one best British band.

Not when there's the Manics, Radiohead, Blur, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, New Order, Joy division, The Smiths, Petshop Boys, Eurythmics, Oasis, Bloc Party, Cold Play, Keane, The Stones, the Kinks, Stone Roses, Iron Maiden, Orbital and a huge pile of other excellent British acts who've been (or continued to be) active since 1980.
You cannot simply pick one.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and why did you put U2 in this poll? they're Irish (not a part of the UK) and how many people actually like U2? they never struck me as hugely popular.
Where have you been for the last 15 years? U2 are arguably the biggest band on the planet.

Where the hell is Iron Maiden?
As much as I love Iron Maiden, weren't they formed in 1975? Plus, you got to admit they don't have the widespread appeal of the others in the list. These bands on the list sort of sum up the British sound, which is exclusive to these isles, whereas you could say Iron Maiden go hand in hand with the 70's rockers of America.

My vote goes to Muse. Brilliant live band and pretty inventive guitar and bass. Pretty cool they're beating all but Other atm.

MIA from this list are Maiden, The Cure, Suede, Manic Street Preachers and Stereophonics. Oh and the Prodigy.

Not to pick nits, but U2 has been one of the biggest bands in the world for decades, particularly following the 1983 release of War. They've won more Grammy awards than any other band in history and have sold something like 100 bazillion albums. In terms of music, U2 pretty much embodies popularity.

The band has numerous enthusiastic detractors too, particularly among the young, musically-relevant hipster population who disdain anything with a following of more than 17 of the coolest people on the planet. But I find that very much like the criticism of people who deride World of Warcraft as a shitty game: Their problem isn't with the game so much as with the fact that something they're generally indifferent toward is so enormously popular.

But they are Irish, as you say, so yeah. Wrong list.
oh, I see. Me and my friends are the U2-Hating hipsters you described (with the execption of the cool part).

Agreed Unknown Pleasures (their 2nd album kids) was released in 1979 and was the bands final album. By default they are a 1970's band and popular consus placess their influence there also.

I prefer Joy Division to New Order but as far as musical impact goes New Order broke more ground and have influenced more groups. As an aside and a random fact. My parents next door neighbour has Peter Hook signed to his management firm. I get tickets to see him Dj and the Likes. Bonus to me!
