My vote goes to Final Fantasy X, the only game that I've ever played where grinding is fun!
Also the others suck (except VIII, which at least has a good story).
Please tell me you were being sarcastic :(

While FFVI is undoubtably the best I put my vote in for FFX mainly because I just recently finished it for the first time and thought it was great also FFVII is definately the most over rated of the series.

Why does everyone keep saying that?!
I like the story in Final Fantasy VIII! It's really good if you pay attention.

Oh noes! I has to come and crash this party. Final Fantasy wouldn't be that annoying if they just quit making it a game and make it a direct-to-video anime like it should be. I mean really, they've been using the same game system since 1987. If gameplay is that unimportant then just make it a movie like you want it to be. I've played 1, 4, 7, 8, 9, and 10, and no, not completed any of them. But I at least sampled them to develop constructive criticism of the games.

First of all, Random Battles top my list of game annoyances. The anime culture surrounding the game makes me cringe but that is what appeals to most people. It kills me when fans of a video game series can't admit the faults it has, Fallout 3 has faults but it doesn't keep me from enjoying it. There are also a lot of Fallout fans who think Fallout 3 is member of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse and has come to herald the end of good games.

If you like a game, there is no real reason to get upset over the fact that someone else hates it.

As for me? You can regard this post as the crazy hobo sitting on the street corner who smells odd and is waving a sign about how the end of the world is near.

Way back when I was 12, I thought the story was good. Replayed the thing 5 years later, then picked out all the inconsistencies, deus ex machinas, and the pathetic attempt at making GF's a central part of the story. What happened to me is the exact opposite of what happened to you: I payed more attention and I saw how horrible it all is. That and the Junction System actually made using magic in battle a no-no.

Believe it or not, I actually like VIII better than Tactics. shame I never beat it though. The third disc broke.

I can agree that the junction system sucks... Horribly! And the characters are pretty bad, but in my opinion the overall story (ie. w/o the crappy dialog) is pretty satisfying. Not compared with good books and comic-books and movies... And games with good stories, but compared to other Final Fantasy titles.

I feel the need to point out 6 as my favorite as well. However, it isn't on the list so I'm going to be controversial and vote for X-2. I just don't get the hate for this game. It has a diverse and fun world, tons of minigames and quests, great graphics, and a fun battle system. I can understand the feeling that it negates the power of 10's ending, but it was fun to visit that world again.

Then again, I think Prince of Persia: Warrior Within is a great game as well.

Well, FFIX is my favorite FF so far. Next is XII (I may rattle on about my complaints about story, but the game DID suck away 116 hours of my life, and I haven't beaten Yiazmat yet). And then FFX. FFX is third because it has that laughing scene. Oh my god the laughing scene.

FFIV for the DS and FFX are about the only two i've finished that i enjoyed.

XII was ok despite the stick it gets and [flameshield]VII was overrated IMHO [/flameshield]

so from that list X was the best, cause most of the later ones are crap.

I've played 7,8 and currently playing 9
I'd have to say so far i'd rate 7 the best and 9 a close second!
8 I didn't really like Squall that much, Zell was okay but I just never got the whole " we were all kids, with a chick from the past trying to take over the future"
9 is great cause of the little black mage!
But I'm only up to disk 2

I voted for 12 because i feel it brought the game away from the direction it had headed from 8-10, where it was increasingly boring to me. 7 was pretty good but i dislike the storyline. Really other than that I did like 2, and 3( 6 i guess some call it).

I really have to say Tactics for the win.

Don't get me wrong, I surely did love pretty much all of the main line of the franchise (well except that X-2 crap... but no one really admits that one existed in the first place right...?), but honestly it doesn't get much better than this.

Outside of that, I'll go ahead and list my top three after that for funsies and whatnot, from top to bottom:

FFVII - 'Twas the first one I played, and as such will always hold a deep seat in my heart. The graphics outside of battle and CG were questionable at best, and the story was as convoluted as it gets... but I loved it nonetheless.

FFX - From the opening sequence when 'Otherworld' serenaded Tidus' aquatic dance, to the incredible battles and the heart-breaking love-story ending, this game was made of pure win.

FFVI - Loveable characters, epic story. It was pretty amazing.

VII - First every FF and i was truly drawn in
X - Story was a bit far fetched but i loved the whole package and graphical update
VIII - Gunblades for the MF'in win

In that order for me

That's the point though. X actually had a good storyline and bittersweet ending. X-2 pretty much vomited all over it. I like Spira and enjoyed visiting it again, but the number of pointless mini-games, quests, and inconsequential plot dragged down any potential it had (which it lost as soon as it started). You can skip half the game and still beat it.
I did love the combat and dressphere system though. I prefer the ATB turn-based system compared to what they had in X. But jeez, what was Square thinking?

I also disliked how they drastically changed Yuna. She was actually respectable in X (even though she was your typical defenseless, white mage *****, but still).

By the way, this is amazing. Watch it. Haters will love it. Fanboys will hate it. Fans will laugh.
Win, win, win.
