I feel ashamed that more people enjoy playing Half Life 2 more than #1, I wonder if this is because they where too young to play the first one when it was released?

I don't think that Duke Nukem 3D deserves to be in that list, Halo CE clearly had more of an impact and leaving it out seems a bit obtuse and designed to bring in arguments.

I would have to say Halo Combat Evolved but all on that list are pretty close.
Not really clear at. Duke helps bridge the simple keycard puzzles and shoot 'em up dynamics seen in Doom into the more complex iterative gameplay seen in titles such as Half-Life. To this end, it's very difficult to imagine the progression of shooters without it (also, Shadow Warrior--also by 3D Realms--was one of the first FPSes to feature vehicles, alternative firing, and sticky bombs, if not the first).

Modern Warfare 2 (2009).

I could see why that's not on the list. Public perception and all.

Not that I care - IW can do set pieces like no one else and in MW2, they went all-in. I loved it. Easy as that.
Do you mean set pieces as in the environments? Cause if so, I gotta agree with you. Those levels in the SP which were set in America, tearing through the suburbs and fighting in the White House were amazing, I loved them. The rest not so much, but I agree IW really know how to create a damn cool atmosphere. Doesn't beat HL2 for me, but it comes close.

Alas, yes, that applies to me. I played HL2 before HL1. However since then I have played and completed HL1, and I can see why it was revolutionary for it's time, but I just can't enjoy it nearly as much as I enjoy HL2.

Although something like Deus Ex, which has similar graphics and was just as innovative, I enjoy more than HL1.

Which leads me to believe that I still would've enjoyed Half Life 2 more even if I had played them in order...if that makes sense.

I'm going with the Halo series. I had to pick one I'd take Halo 2.

Had the strongest campaign of the series (why did they abandon the Covenant's perspective so much for Halo 3? That was the best part!) and kickstarted Xbox LIVE and console online gaming as a whole into what it is today.

Doom because that is the only FPS I still enjoy and the music is still awesome.
BTW why the hell is deus ex in poll?
Its an RPG not an FPS.
If deus ex is there then why isn't morrowind or minecraft.
Y'know cause you have bow and arrow and can shoot from first person perspective.

Sorry to people who'll hate me, but I'm sticking by Halo. Specifically 1, 2, and ODST. The campaigns at least. Multiplayer is fine, but it isn't for everyone, and I respect that.

FPS is a broad enough genre that I really can't say I have a single favorite. To get all metaphorical on ya...
if Doom and Duke3D are apples...
Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and Bioshock are oranges...
Deus Ex is a pineapple...
and Goldeneye 007 is a banana...
then Unreal Tournament (clarification: the one released in 1999. No other iteration of the game was worth a damn) and its million mods are a massive and varied fruit salad, minus the bananas and pineapple.

Still, there's nothing about mods in the opening post, and stock UT is pretty bland... so I'm gonna go with Deus Ex. I'm a fan of pineapple.

HL2 for the major players but to be honest DFLW from Novalogic was my favorite FPS followed by DFX(partial to that because i made 1 mod, and was mod team leader for another). as for the latest and tardest games.. COD has outdone itself on being the cheapest linear overdone garbage again and looks to be sucking the BF franchise down that hole alongside it. I wouldnt mind seeing both go down the tubes in the next couple years but I know the sheeple will flock to the banner even if the banner represents mediocracy.

Funny how Halo:CE isn't there.

I voted Doom, but that's just my opinion. I really liked Doom.
Yes...no Halo CE. How curious. I feel a little depressed.
Out of those listed I'd have to say that my favourite was Bioshock.

EDIT: I would just like to say that specifically my favourite game was Halo 2.

Call of Duty 4. It was a fun game, with a lot of potential in mod-ability and let people play the game the way they wanted to play it.

You need Quake on this. Quake basically revolutionized the FPS with three major, game-changing features (that come to mind off the hip).

1. Full 3D instead of the pseudo 3d that other engines had.
2. TCP/IP support multiplayer
3. Modability

I wont go on at length about the intrinsic value of each of these, but consider the weight and impact of the first game to have all three, at once.
