What did the Metroid Prime subseries do wrong? D:

Perfectly captured atmosphere, an ever-present sense of adventure and exploration, kick-ass equipment and weaponry and the strongest female character ever? Come on, you know you've never seen a game like it.

Modern Warfare 2 (2009).

I could see why that's not on the list. Public perception and all.

Not that I care - IW can do set pieces like no one else and in MW2, they went all-in. I loved it. Easy as that.
Have you ever played Deus Ex? Just genuinely curious here.
Yup.

I can see how people love it and all. But it's not my thing. Just like some people find Hitman too boring.

I still am looking forward to Human Revolution.

And, yes, I also have played Half-Life 2. In 2010. Wasn't impressed much.
Knew I'd find you here! :D Nice to see you not being flamed. Hell, people are AGREEING with you!

OK then. I picked "other". Chances are that those who know me will know exactly what I'm going to nominate, because I've said it what must be dozens of times now: Halo.

...Oh, so it's gotta be a single one? Damn. Umm... haven't played Halo CE (will be able to in a couple of weeks or so), Halo 2 is good but also often makes itself difficult through annoying means (like those invincible Brutes), Halo 3 was the first Halo game I ever played as well as my first 360 game and was very well polished in most respects, Halo 3: ODST was a damn good expansion that tried something different and was easily the most atmospheric of the games, and Halo: Reach absolutely perfected the gameplay in all respects (including level design)... but closer analysis of the story reveals a few holes.

So... I'm gonna have to go with Halo 3. Make no mistake, this is partly nostalgia talking, I'm fully aware of this. But I also just think it's the best overall. Goddamn, it's hard to concentrate on writing with the Naruto: Shippuden OST II playing in the background (electric guitars + pipe organs = whoawesome), and I could just let my 7 playthroughs speak for themselves, but basically:

- The enemy AI is brilliant and challenging, at least on the Covenant side.
- Each level is basically a series of mini-sandboxes - there's a great deal of freedom in every combat situation, so very few things ever happen the same way twice - giving it a near-infinite replay value (this is the same for all Halos, it's just very noticeable in Halo 3).
- The soundtrack is the best ever featured in a Halo game. Which is no mean feat.
- There is great variety in both enemies and weapons.
- The art style is as great as ever. You can actually see this most on some of the multiplayer maps, funnily enough.
- Hmm... anything else? Oh yeah, the story is good too. Resolves the main trilogy's overarching plot very well. Also, I recently read all the terminals. Too bad it wasn't on Legendary, but they were still interesting and informative on the background.
- The voice acting is great too!

OK, I think that's everything.

Maybe there's something weird with the forums today. I said bad things about Extra Credits in the other thread and people agreed with me.

Incidentally, what do you think of the Fallout series?
Didn't play it. But I did love what I saw of Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Deus Ex just didn't get me atmospherically. I am definitely going to try to get into it again.

I'm perhaps less than qualified to answer this question, but the only ones I've ever truly enjoyed were the original Goldeneye and Call Of Duty 4.

I don't count Bioshock or the latter-day Fallout games - there's far too much RPG in there to consider them FPS in the traditional sense.

the Serious Sam series

Doom deserves all the credit and is still a fun game, but Serious Sam is more fun and provides a better challenge.

Deus Ex doesn't even belong on the poll as it is a RPG first and a shooter second. The shooting in DX is just sluggish and deliberately inaccurate.

Bioshock isn't great as a pure shooter either and is held up mostly by it's atmosphere. Also doesn't belong.

Painkiller should've been on the poll, after Serious Sam.

I'm gonna have to be that guy and say Halo: CE. It set the bar as what gamers use to define as a good shooter. For its time, it was the most revolutionary shoooter to date. That, mixed with a twist worthy of M. Night Shyamalan, made it one of the best shooters I've played.

Halo; its what's for winners.

I think I used the word "shooter" too many times......

Next thing you know, you'll be able to say "Multiplayer > Singleplayer" and you'll only get flogged 10 times rather than hanged from a larger-than-life statue of Gordon Freeman!

From the list - Deus Ex. It's unfair to vote for an RPG in a best FPS contest, but life's like that, you know. :p

Also, shooters would be, in my opinion, way more fun to play alone if they offered players more freedom and perhaps interesting stories to follow. Deus Ex, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Fallout 3 are all good examples of this. But, again, they don't exactly qualify as shooters, do they?

So maybe I'm just not a shooter person. I do like a spot of multiplayer shooting now and then, though (Modern Warfare 2 being my drug of choice lately).

Of those listed, Goldeneye gets my vote for singleplayer (with Deus Ex, as a hybrid, a close second) though TWINE, Perfect Dark and later the Timesplitters series really did polish multiplayer to the Nth degree. Surprised UT99 isn't on the poll- it really carved out a market niche when it came out.

Completely split betwen Unreal Tournament 2004 (for the multiplayer side of things) and Far Cry 2 (on the SP side).

Wasted a lot of my younger life on UT just playing against bots mostly. Bombing Run + Inhuman + Alcohol + No Time Limit would see me through the night.

Far Cry 2 is the game I've put most time into on SP, having played it through fully twice and almost fully through another time. I love almost everything it does and lament constantly on Ubisofts stupidity on not making it easy to mod.
You and I could have some very interesting discussions on shooters, you know...

glad to see all the half-life 2 love. I feel like it isn't appreciated nearly as much these days. All these kids wanna talk about are their Halos and Call of Dutys
You've not been on here long, have you?

Is that "interesting discussions" as in sitting in high-backed chairs, smoking pipes and drinking old Scotch or are we talking pistols at dawn here?
