I also wish that not only could hang gliders ride the occasional thermal to stay aloft, but we should have been able to climb onto the hills that seperate all the valleys the roads go through. That way we could observe a hostile base right up from the high mountains and plan our assault. I was also a bit disappointed that the big mountain in the north area was off limits.

Hehe- I've got COD2 on lend from a friend and am chipping away at it these days. I really loved one part in the desert where you look up at a distant sand dune and see a whole wave of Germans running towards your settlement, and you've only got your bolt-action handy...
I only played Vengeance once at a LAN where there was some prize up for grabs for who could win a game of Rabbit. I did enjoy skiing quite a lot, but I've always been more of a Battlefield 1942 man. To date I've never seen any other game (not even UT2004) get the balance of vehicles against each other and infantry just right. It was clearly a fluke though, as none of the subsequent Battlefields have come close to balancing it right. (Or even having a similar number of units)
I was always a bit disappointed that you couldn't climb up the bigger ridges and so got a bit invisible-walled. Also I wish there was a 'clamber' button so you can get over little piles of rocks which can sometimes be just slightly too big to jump over. But I can see why you aren't allowed to climb the bigger hills, as then the game turns into a walk in the park with a sniper rifle. More so than it can be already.
Always hated that level in CoD2 as your teammates are just so ineffective. In the end it's you against everyone coming at you from everywhere. Until you get to go to the roof of a building, then it becomes a lot more fun. The game has some incredible set pieces though, and I just find it infinitely more fun than the recent CoD games.
Never played BF1942, not much of a multiplayer gamer beyond some TF2 (which I haven't played in years now). I saw a friend play BF2 once and it seemed to involve waiting around for a vehicle which someone else always steals. Almost all the UT I did was offline or coop because the bots were so good. Malcolm only ever pissed me off when he was on a team. By himself it was always easy. Xan would fuck me right up though, especially as I hate the map you fight him on (Hyperblast?).
Tribes Vengeance I played for the singleplayer which was a fantastic space opera. Everything was brightly coloured and clear, moving about was great because of the skiing, jetpacks and grappler, the weapons were fun and the missions quite varied (with the giant outdoor maps being the best). The story was actually quite fun with some nice twists as well. But it got released in the same year as a certain HL2 and Tribes veterens hated the game before it was even released because it was trying to be more accessible.
