So. . . before a deluge of anticipated games arrives in the latter half of 2011, what do you guys think is the best game--not counting mobile or indie titles--released this year?

I'm going with Portal 2--while the single-player was undoubtedly half-assed, the main portion of the game (see: the co-op) was sublime, and rarely have I completed a game so assured in my conviction that it's one of the best ever. Gabe Newell, it seems, may not have been off the mark when he described it as Valve's "best game yet"--while the competition gets pretty stiff up around there, Valve's courtship of the casual-universal is arguably superior, in my opinion, to either Half-Life, indebted as both those games are to the linear conventions of the shooters that preceded them (which they expanded considerably upon, to their credit). This is Super Mario Bros. 3, SimCity, Sid Meier's Pirates!; people--an instant classic, and one that puts most of the counterfeited achievements of this generation thus far (the GTA IV's and Dragon Age's) to shame.

Also: Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a good game, but was more or less devoid of original ideas (it just offered some admirable refinements--the cover system, etc.), featured a storyline worse than Invisible War's, boss fights that sullied the experience, a considerably more watered-down pantheon of moral choices than in DX, augmentation that hardly compelled the player to make choices, etc. So. . . I have a hard time understanding why people are earmarking it as the best thus far this year.

It's a bit silly to have pokémon on there; it only has nostalgia going for it really. Also, I hope you mean Dragon Age 2, because Dragon Age: Origins is amazing.

OT: portal 2, best and smoothest co-op I've played.

I can't really say. I mean i loved LA Noire, but I can't bring myself to beat the last level.

So I guess I'll pick Portal 2?

Also guys I was wondering. I have enough money to buy one more video game. Should I get Dues Ex? Or is their another better game coming out soon?

(I've already pre-ordered Skyrim and Batman Arkham City)

Same thing with Human Revolution--Portal 2 offered a dramatically expanded take on the original; the new DX simply refines the original's gameplay whilst excising much of the complexity that made it so attractive in the first place.

Dead Island. Without a doubt Dead Island.
Very little else has even interested me let alone got me hooked but Dead Island has managed to devour 4 full days of my life. Like wake up, jump on, only leave when its time to go to bed at 4am.
I swear, if I am considering getting some jars like TF2s sniper.
I should pick this up.

Human Revolution is a good, if not great, game; just fails to live up in most meaningful ways to the original. Still, I liked it better than the vast majority of shooters in the past decade, or RPGs--so not a bad pick, but if you haven't, download DX from Steam first.

Oh god, I need disposable income.

I have not played any of those games...

*checks disc collection and Steam*

Yup, I have not bought a single 2011 release. This is an incredibly depressing day for me.

EDIT: Hang on, I got Dragon Age 2!! That is my only 2011 game purchase. So, this year goes down in history as a year in which promising franchises get shafted by well intentioned but badly realised sequels, when corporate greed wins over promising innovation. Sounds about right, even outside the Video Games lifestyle. That is probably more disappointing than my old no 2011 games status.

Out of the small selection I've played, probably LA Noire. Sure, it does sign post some of the interrogations choices sometimes and Cole tends to eat his own damn face after speaking on some occasions, I just enjoyed it a lot more then Portal 2, Mortal Kombat, DA2 and whatever else I've played.

And for added bonuses, I'll list my worst game so far of 2011. And that's Shadows of The Damned. It's not a bad game, it's pretty good fun and it's something a bit different but that fucking aiming system. I played through the game in about 8/9 hours and I still couldn't warm up to the aiming system. It's just...awful for an aiming system. XP But overall, it's a pretty decent game.

Other: Marvel vs Capcom 3

Only other new games I've played this year are Mortal Kombat and The Witcher 2, and neither of those impressed me at all.

Frozen Synapse is the best game I have played this year. I have played Portal 2, Human Resources, and the Witcher 2. Why is Dead Space 2 on the list?

Going to have to go with Witcher 2.

Witcher and Witcher 2 are quite possibly my favourite games of all time .... OF ALL TIME.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed some of the other games mentioned, Deus Ex especially, they just don't grip me like Witcher does.

The only one I've played on that list is Portal 2, although I recently picked up DX3 and I'm looking forward to it.

Games I've played this year: Little Big Planet 2, Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection, Portal 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

In order from best to worst.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Little Big Planet 2
Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy
Portal 2
Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection

I imagine that the 3 or 4 more games I wanna play before the years end will end up making Deus Ex 2nd or 3rd with Skyrim and Batman: Arkham City fitting around that somewhere

Pokemon B/W is the unsung choice here. It's kept me from boredom since I got it back in March.

I'm going to copy/paste a post I typed yesterday in a thread about game of the year.

First, Dead Space 2. While the game isn't all that scary (like, at all), I can't think of a single game where I like the control scheme more. Its like Resident Evil 4, but improved. Add on a pretty good story, likeable characters, and the immense fun of New Game+, and you've got a great, great game.

Next, Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Yes, it is kind of hindered by the fact that Ultimate is coming out before year's end, but that doesn't change the fact that I've thrown hundreds of hours into the game.

And my newest candidate, Dead Island. I'm about thirty hours into the game, and I just can't stop playing. While a lot of people have bitched about glitching, I've only experienced one glitch, and it was for a random side-mission that meant nothing. And as soon as I rebooted the game, I tried the mission again, and it was fine. If the Fallout games can get away with what they have, then Dead Island should get the same pass.

Honestly, right now my choice is for Dead Island. This might be because its the current obsession, and I might change my mind after I've beaten it and spent some time away from it, but god damn do I enjoy this game. If not that, MvC3.

dead island yeah it was buggy and the plot was thin as paper but I have not had that much fun for awhile so I say dead island was the best

So far that is the until the day skyrim comes out
