I'm going to join the three or four people who have said the STALKER games, without any hesitation whatsoever.

No way its Halo or CoD for me. I'd say it's between HalfLife 2, Deus Ex, and Portal. Purely because they were the most revolutionary
And what was revolutionary about Portal? The game itself was just a clever little puzzle game, and the portal concept was done just as well in Prey a year earlier (game itself wasn't great, but the portals were fine).

Same goes for Half Life 2.

The games might be good, and perhaps they're contenders for the "best" title the thread is seeking, but interesting level design and story does not equal "revolutionary".

Personally I wouldn't consider Deus Ex or Portal to be FPSs.

I think I'll go with HL2 though.

I'm just saying for myself here but i am enjoying the first modern warfare instead of the second because of originality

They were revolutionary in the same way that Doom was. They had been done before, but they were really top-of-the-mark games, which then lead other devs to think "hang on a minute, if they can make games as good as that, why can't we?"

I think it will be Halo Reach when it comes out. Not because I'm a halo fanboy, but the weapons, vehicles and game modes are ace, and have you SEEN Forge World?

Plus jetpacks make everything better.
OMG A MAP EDITOR!! WHY HAS NO ONE DONE THIS BEFORE?!.... :|

[/sarcasm]

To be honest halo is kind of stale, it's a solid series and once upon a time it was an excelent one (im talkin gcombat Evolved) nut its far from the bleeding edge anymore.

In terms of being deep, open and realisitc ARMA II really pushed the boundaries in many areas of gameplay and technical achivement.

On the multiplayer front i still see no competition for TF2. If you have played it for any lengeth of time then you know it's got something no other game really has.

Singleplayer wise the STALKER games also push things into new areas.
What will be amazing to see sometime soon would be a forge mood were you could literally make your own map. Like make you own mountains, caves and forests that would be sweeeeet

Examples? What has come about thanks to Portals success? All big name FPS around I can think of at the moment have their roots before Portal, or have nothing in them that can said to have been inspired by anything portal did, not counting Portal 2.

Admittedly, with portal there are no direct examples, but my point is that without people making original games all we are going to have are Call Of Duty clones, and nobody wants that. And anyway, why am I being flamed for a harmless opinion? Am I hurting you with my love of good games?

Team Fortress 2, Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat and Call of Duty: World at War.

For those wondering, Insurgency is a grade-A Source mod.

In that case, Metroid Prime is definately one of the best FPS's I've ever played. Maybe not in the multiplayer aspect, but in sheer epicness.

But if I have to go with an unstoppable beast of a Juggernaut, I will side with Halo: Reach on this one.

And yes, TF2 is up there for me.

I am going to throw out battlefield 2. Bad company and such are just not the same. No class based FPS that good since then (except tf2, but needless to say that's a different style).

In terms of features and replay value I would have to say Halo. If we are talking pure multiplayer then I would have to say that Battlefield will always come out on top for me.

Single player: Modern Warfare 2
Are you for real? The SP is terrible, barring all the pretty explosions.

CoD4 I would allow, even though it is easy and short.

ArmA II, at the moment.

I love that game. It with the ACE2 mod is the closest thing to real combat you'll ever experience.

Comparing Arma2 to a typical FPS just opens up too big a can of worms. Besides the fact that Arma is a resounding failure when judged by the (stale, lowest common denominator) standards of modern FPS, the game is utterly in a class of its own. Nothing else approaches what it achieves.

My favorite is Call of Duty 2, cause I actually really like WWII games. Also, can't forget Rainbow Six: Vegas.
