It is a toss up between The Hangover and Star Trek for me. Hmm...I just don't know. I love both of them.

I think I went to see movies considerably less this year, but District 9 really blew me away. I went in knowing nothing about it (my PC had died so I had next to no movie news for a few months). Also Inglorious was a pleasure to watch, and I just got it free of a friend who got two copies for xmas!

10.... [Insert Movie Here]
9... Guess what? There isn't a movie here either!
8... Ava... No! No. Don't be stupid.
7... Coraline - A really interesting movie that is knocked down a couple of spots for going on a bit.
6... Inglourious Basterds - Quentin Tarantino + WWII + Hitler = Barrel full of win!
5... Public Enemies - Michael Mann single handedly saves the summer blockbuster period with a great biopic drama thing.
4... Watchmen - Don't listen to the haters. It truly is the very best that you could get Watchmen on screen. Compellingly brilliant viewing.
3... Toy Story 3D - Losing marks for the 3D but it is as good an excuse as any to see Toy Story on the big screen. And, yes, it is still brilliant.
2... Where The Wild Things Are - A very late contender, this unbelievably sad movie is populated by incredible characters, great screenplay and wonderful Wild Things.
1... District Motherfucking 9 - Look... I know it's an awesome film (my personal best film ever), You know it's an awesome film... so why are we still talking about it?

That's the list according to great films I've seen. Other honourable mentions that will probably get added later when I watch them in the future: Crank 2, Frost/Nixon (released in 2009 in the UK), Gran Torino and about a dozen other films I haven't seen and can't remember.

Oh, and there is a reason why Pixar's Up isn't on this list. That's because Up is so good, so utterly perfect that if it were to go up against anything on this list it would just be a brutal massacre! So, District 9 is the Movie of 2009 whilst Up is the Film of the Year. I can already hear the words cop out ringing in my ear, but fuck you! it's my list and I can do whatever I bloody well want with it!

Bring on 2010! What's that? The first big film release is Nanny McPhee 2? (shoots self in head)

My vote goes to The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.
(And Coraline was the best animated movie of the year.)

Up in the Air

I would say the Hurt Locker but it was actually released in 2008 apparently. It's sooo good, though, and is probably the favorite for best picture at the oscars.

also, what a shite list of candidates, why is G.I. Joe in there?

Well, either 9 or District 9.

Both are great.
[sub]And they're 9![/sub]

EDIT: For those in the poll: Avatar
And if anyone says Twilight, I will kill someone
I would have to say Twili... Eh... Never mind.

District 9 was really good, as was Moon. Star Trek was good fun and really well cast.

Come on. where's the Dark Knight?!
Probably on last years list of movies.

OT: I'm stuck between Avatar and Harry Potter.

Edit: Oh and Inglourious Basterds, of course. :D

The best (which is subjective and based on my opinion) would probably be inglorious basterds, watchmen (was that seriously this year?), public enemies or zombieland. I'd be legitimately surprised if avatar wasn't the highest grossing.
*edit* oh, and gran tourin, that was a damn fine film.

Also, the hangover? Really? I thought it was terrible...
