Elder Scrolls hands down. You have great spells, an immense world, books, great graphics (for that time anyway) and generally captivating stories. And I really felt like I was in control of my character.

KotOR 1 is my favourite as far as new games are concerned, but Planescape: Torment is also amazing.

People are hard on JRPG's but there are very few games that truly offer "Roleplaying," in fact I'm pretty sure I can name almost all of them...

Fallout 1 - 3
Baldurs Gate 1, 2
Icewind Dale 1, 2
Persona 3, 4.
Mass Effect
Jade Empire
Never Winter Nights 1, 2.
Planescape: Torment
KOTOR 1, 2.

These are the only ones I can think of that REALLY offer a Roleplaying experience... in essence where you can "define" your characters Personality and direct their Actions and have it impact the Story, even if, in some cases, it is to a limited degree.

(I deliberately left out The Elder Scrolls Games out of spite for their lack of characterization, all you do in those games is decide WHAT quests to accept and WHEN to accept them, never get a feel for WHY you might accept them)

Baldur's Gate series, hands down.
Fantastic story, unforgettable NPC's, epic length, great dialogue, interesting and fun side quests. I've never played an RPG better since (I still play BG), and it made me a believer in the power and sheer awesomeness of Bioware.
Pretty much this. They're the best RPGs ever made.

I believe that they CAN be surpassed... but when and how I'll never know.

Out of these choices it's Fallout series.

Ofcourse it's ES in the lead. Willing to bet it's Obliviontards too, instead of Morrowind enthousiasts.
