People are hard on JRPG's but there are very few games that truly offer "Roleplaying," in fact I'm pretty sure I can name almost all of them...
Fallout 1 - 3
Baldurs Gate 1, 2
Icewind Dale 1, 2
Persona 3, 4.
Mass Effect
Jade Empire
Never Winter Nights 1, 2.
Planescape: Torment
KOTOR 1, 2.
These are the only ones I can think of that REALLY offer a Roleplaying experience... in essence where you can "define" your characters Personality and direct their Actions and have it impact the Story, even if, in some cases, it is to a limited degree.
(I deliberately left out The Elder Scrolls Games out of spite for their lack of characterization, all you do in those games is decide WHAT quests to accept and WHEN to accept them, never get a feel for WHY you might accept them)
