As for the "no spin-off" condition, I knew many would propose Halo/Star Wars/whatever books, but if we face reality: if you strip the brand from them, they don't (usually) compare well to the "original" novels. Generalizing, you could say that if their writers were good writers, they would have made success with an original book.

I admit it's a pretty arbitrary limitation, but there is only space for 8 choices in a poll, and fantasy/sci-fi genres are littered with trilogies, while with the "5 or more" condition we have come down to a few but very strong choices. I would like to make a "best sci-fi book ever" poll too, but the technology is against us!high_castle said:
