I can't vote.. too difficult to choose.. I liked them all!!
The original brought so gaming, and with a mix of Nintendo characters duking it out, who's to complain? It is a classic that will always be my top pick for party game.
Melee introduced new features that brought new light to series (The series already had its spotlight, so it went from bright, to EXTRA Bright!). The new event-match and story-mode helped Melee so much more, more items, characters, stages, costumes, characters (Oh, and did I mention 'characters'?) made the matches so much more exciting, and then there were trophies.. Yes, the most fun I have ever had was from having to collect a virtual library of trophies, with page-full sized descriptions on origins and highlights.
Brawl has what Melee did not. An online mode is available, even more trophies were added, a playable list of retro games was included, and the ability to use Final Smashes (Yes, Final Smashes are awesome. They add a new level to gameplay where the player who was in possession of the Smash Ball could eliminate opponents with the cruelest and most fantastic move they can offer.)
The stage creator, the ability to take pictures during matches and record the matches spiced things up. The Subspace Emissary is a nice addition that actually had a story, and made a great co-op mode. Boss Battles expanded on the Giga-Bowser/ Master Hand + Crazy Hand concept, and added more boss type characters (Which feature in the Subspace Emissary mode), such as Rayquaza, Porky, etc.
Of the three games, I have chosen Brawl as my favorite Smash game. It has so much to immerse yourself in, and it does no dis-service by adding in a whole crew of new characters and taking some out. ..Although I do miss Mewtwo and Roy dearly. (Characters I prefer playing with are Mario, Mr. Game & Watch, Cpt. Falcon, Kirby, Zero Suit Samus/ Samus, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario, and Wario.)
