I have a hard time deciding between TIE Fighter, KotOR or Dark Forces. All 3 are very good game but for very different reasons.
TIE Fighter gave me the chance to play as part of the Empire. I loved that. Besides that, the game was really well done and it had a load of great missions (save a few horrible escorts jobs) and an interesting story. It still is the game that supports my idea that the Empire in fact was not evil and was doing the right thing. It also showed a little of the inner workings of the Empire and the power politics between the leaders. Perfect.
KotOR; well, I don't think I need to elaborate much on that one. Gave new life to the vision of Star Wars and avoided being dragged into the mess that is the new movies and the lame EU (apart from the Zahn books about Thrawn. They were awesome).
Dark Forces I remember wanting to play for SO long when I was a youngster. When I finally got the chance I was awed. It captured the spirit perfectly and introduced Kyle Katarn (before he got with the Jedi mojo). He was just a bounty hunter and the game managed to run parallel to the movies and it just worked great. I still miss Jan Ors.
The common thing in both TIE Fighter and Dark Forces that I love the most is that the games was about "common" people in the Star Wars universe. Neither my pilot in TIE Fighter nor Katarn was awesome Jedi or generals or anything like that. They did important jobs and may have saved the galaxy but not because the Force was strong in them.
Gah. I'll go with TIE Fighter. I still play that game every now and then.
