Sometimes I wonder if it's stunted thinking in the first place. If the thinking is only basic, it won't have room for features of writing meant to reflect complexity of ideas. Precision of lexicon and elegance of sentence structure won't seem worth the effort it takes to master them. Good writing and complex thought should go hand in hand in education, but sadly, in general parents and schools seem to be providing neither. Peer culture may even actively discourage displays of literacy.

Americans.

Oh yeah, I went there.

In a less flame-permiting manner though, I'd have to agree with the majory. Text messaages did it, or atleast started it.

I hate terrible grammar. It annoys me if I have a typo in my posts and if I spot one, I must change it. Well, online I can understand some poor grammar such as odd capitalisation (for EMPHASIS) and multiple pieces punctuation, etc, because you can't sense tone or see facial expressions...

It also annoys me when people protest against me correcting their grammar or pointing out that if they typed a little better, they might just pass off as a cat jumping on the keyboard. If you're speaking to me in a manner such as "lol lyk wot r u doign my grama is fyn lyk lmao y do u evn cair how i typ anywy lol"

If it's little grammar things such as saying "who" instead "whom" or "me and X" instead of "X and I" then I can understand them not wanting me to ALWAYS correct it, sometimes I slip up on those, but people seem to think being online means that it is acceptable to interact via butchering the English language (or whatever language they're speaking).

If someone spoke in the broken language they typed in you'd think they were an idiot. You'd also be worried if they ended every sentence by laughing, as many people seem to replace a full-stop with "lol".

I'd say fanfic have a great big deal to do with this...

Ever read that godawful vampire-Harry Potter crossover written by a 13 yo with social problems?
If yes then you know what I mean
If no then do NOT try to find out what I am talking about...

That guy said:
In the future the world was dark and scarry. One day Combines came and noone knew why. Combines were robot things that werent robots with ugly faces and sometimes glowing eyes and slaved people in the city and made them angry and sad. Henry Freeman who was living in the city and with his mom said ?mom why are Combines here? and she said ?Henry Freeman Combines are from science and outter space and hate humens.?
I managed to read that paragraph before I started to retch. This guy gets my vote.

I would blatantly blame the blossoming bloom of the internet and the renaissance of IM and comment based typing. YouTube comments and chatting are definitely the smoking guns here.

And on the topic of chatting - honestly, no one is harder to understand than the average Brit.

It's got to be texting.
I remember a few months ago a couple had lost their baby to a terrible dog attack and they'd written the card out in 'txt spk'.
As bad as it sounds I was just as upset by the use of text type in the situation as I was by the thier loss.

Wow, that's retarded to even REMEMBER text speak when something like that happens...

Soulja boy is not on the list.

However...
John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships daddy."
Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons.
"This is Joson" the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!"
So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall.
"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the demons
"I will shoot at him" said the cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the demons" he shouted
The radio said "No, John. You are the demons"
And then John was a zombie.
