I would say Half Life because of the engine, and the other HL Based games,
but for gameplay I would've done Bioshock (if we're only talking about the game itself)

Half Life 2 was honestly confusing for me, I had trouble finding where the next area was. It wasn't the puzzle, maybe it was my own lack of direction but I had problems finding where I was supposed to go. It was still a blast, but the direction problems broke flow for me. As for Bioshock, played the demo, so my opinion is clouded.

Half-Life 2, the gameplay was just much better for me.

Although I have to admit Bioshock did have a twisted and amusing atmosphere.

Half Life 2 for sure. I like overthrowing governments more rather than exploring a destroyed one.

Well, i am aware of that thankyou, and partially consider Bioshock to be in many aspects a reimagining of system shock 2 which came out in 1994, thus the mention. At any rate i didn't think people would interpret what i said as Valve in any way travelling through time and taking inspiration from Bioshock. It was just an off hand statement relating to Bioshock living up to the hype; and Half Life 2 not doing so. By ending badly, then making lazy add ons attempting to make up for it with the episodes, and relying on the source engine for balancing puzzles instead of story structure.

Half Life 2, 10000 times over. I got sick of bioshock during my 2nd playthrough. Have played HL2 about 7-8 times now.

I can understand some people not enjoying it, but I really do not think it deserves the "most overrated shooter" or "generic FPS with physics engine thrown in" titles some people give it.

The plot alone is worth the it, with the G-man, and the entry of Appeture Science (Portal) into the fray in Ep3, Valve has shown it can certainly spin a great tale.

Just my 2 cents though.

P.S I suppose the usual fanboy flames will be headed my way soon

Bioshock the narrative is much more well structured and the immersion isn't hampered by you constantly being reminded of who your mute character is supposed to be. Bioshock has the most intersting environments, characters and plot twists, and doesn't feel like half a game made to shut the fans up.

Bioshock purely because of the twist. I found them both to be bland shooters but at least I felt compelled to progress in Bioshock because of the twist.

Half Life 2. Bioshock is an overrated turd. While Half Life 2 is definitely overrated too, it at least doesnt completely fuck things up by being so far up its own arse thinking its "artsy". The twist sucked (saw it coming from the other side of the Atlantic), and the story sucked. Bioshock cant even give story exposition through characters in a consistant manner, you have to listen to boring audiotapes. Oh, and while Half Life 2 may not have a final "boss" per say, you at least get to finish him yourself, in Bioshock you automatically LOSE the final boss fight, and have to be saved by the little bitchsters. I thought in almost every sense of the word Bioshock sucked. I played through it once, just like Gears of War, and never looked back or forward to the sequel.

Bioshock; It's disturbing and also brings up a quite interesting possiblity. What if there is actually a city built under the sea? and if not, isn't it possible that such a city could be built?
I absolutely love Bioshock, it's my favourite game, although the endings were awful, I thought to myself; "I played this game to get this?" and I was also annoyed that you couldn't kill Andrew Ryan.
Bioshock 2 release date has been pushed back though, bastards

I've literally thought about this for half an hour and decided to vote for Half-Life 2, but only because it was the first... I still don't know which is better :(

My biggest problem with Bioshock is that they spend the 1st half of the game building up to the meeting with Ryan that after it, the game just feels pointless and dull. I think that the developers even called it a mistake to have more game after that part.

The build up and the twist ruined half the game.

Half Life 2 builds up the raiding of the citadel, Combine ass kicking and the meeting with Breen till the final stages, handling it better than Bioshock. The rebel insurgency, the epic Strider battles, climbing of the tower and the meeting with Breen was quite a rush. Tho the final encounter was disapointing, but so was Bioshock.

That and that Half Life 2 is just better. ^^

I like them both, a lot, and for different reasons.

HL2, of course, is much longer, highly cinematic, extremely well-paced, and has a gravity gun.

BioShock, on the other hand, really started sucking in the last third or so of the game. However, the overall story, the Randian philosophy of Rapture (well, at least it started out that way; the citizens of Rapture are actually pretty bad objectivists), and the mixture of steam punk inspired weapons and upgrades with powers made BioShock a real pleasure to play. In the first month and a half I had it, I played through it three times. I loved the atmosphere, too.

I'm abstaining from voting. I think both games are, overall, amazing.
