I've really slowed down in recent years. Pretty much the only series I read anymore is Redwall.

I love all manner of science fiction, especially Asimov, Clarke, and Peter F. Hamilton.

Humor books such as Nothing Is Sacred by Lewis Black.

And believe it or not, science non-fiction by folks such as Sagan and Hawking.

Just finished the Bartimaeus Trilogy and looking to for something else.
If you like the Bartimaeus Trilogy I'd recommend David Weber and John Ringo's March Upcountry, March to the Sea, March to the Stars, and We Few. 1 is fantasy and the other military Sci-fi, but the humor is similar, and both are excellent reads. if you want to stay fantasy pick up anything written or co-written by/with Mercedes Lackey. I'd recommend Arrows of the Queen, Arrows Flight, ad Arrows Fall, first however. But as Mercedes Lackey is rather prolific... there are 20-30 books written solo by her, and another bunch co-written. Out of all prolific fantasy authors, she is the only one I have not found a single book below fantastic.
I'll start checking them out, thanks for the advice.

I read quite a lot. Currently stuck into Andy McNab's action novels. You wouldn't think someone from the SAS would be able to write as well as he does without it being layered with references. I think his books would be awesome even if he didn't have the "Hey, I was in the SAS" card to play.

Well, what else are you going to do with a book? (other than burn it)

I read mostly fiction, mystery, Sci-Fi/ Fantasy, and action (like Andy McNab novels).
Farenheit 451 reference! ^_^
Oh shit, I didn't even notice that. Nice eye.

I read the occasional book
Interesting title. Who's the author :).

Back on track: Yes, I read. A lot. And then I mean a big, big lot. I think I've ate my way through about 5 or 6 books since the year began. Most of those were works by Pratchett, so they don't count as real books (in terms of size and length, don't get me wrong, the quality sqeeuzed into those little pocketbooks is amazing). But I pick up the occasional doorstoppers, you know, the kind of book you can use to stop a door. Or a freight-train. But of course better known for their extensive use and admiration by the blunt-force-trauma-style of serial killers.

I have knack to read very extensive and lengthy books (of the doorstopper-kind). Most recently, I have read the third book in the Sword of Truth-series by Terry Goodkind. Another lengthy one was The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, which is actually a pocketbook-sized novel, but has about 800 to 900 pages, but it was totally worth it. If anyone wants a good read and has a slight interest in fantasy, Rothfuss is your guy. Okay, he has only written one novel so far, but it has become a must to read (in my most humble opinion, of course).
And the rest I've read lately are all books by Pratchett, most of them from the Discworld-series (which would be The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Equal Rites and Mort). But also one of his 'independent' books, called Nation.

This thread may help me then I guess, I started a book once and had to return it but when I went to retrieve it I couldn't find it and now I've forgotten the name and only have a sliver of an idea of the plot.

It goes somewhere along the lines of...

Everyone has their own fate and their paths are set but there's this character who doesn't and he creates his own fate/luck (not sure if he realises it) weddings happen is his wake as does death, a plate flew through a window killing a woman if I rightfully remember.

That's the only bits I remember, any ideas....?

Sounds like the Wheel of Time, Rand al'Thor being Ta'Veren and all... and a plate flying out the window and killing a woman happened in the 6th or 7th book.

I'll read anything if it's good. And I know within the first 10 pages if I'll like it or not (yes, I'm one of those obnoxious folks who actually start reading in the bookstore...but at least I put the title back where it belongs if I won't be buying it). As for genre...I definitely started as a high fantasy fan ever since cracking open LOTR in the sixth grade. But I've branched out since then, moving onto SF, mystery, lit fic, and various things that defy categorization. I still have a soft spot for well-done SF and fantasy, though. In fact, the novel I'll soon be pitching is SF.

For favorite authors I'd have to go with Philip K. Dick, George R.R. Martin, Karin Lowachee, Thomas Mallon, Hemingway, and Dave Barry (the last falling into that guilty pleasure category).

actual books as opposed to graphic novels, comics and, manga? Yes. I am currently getting through Death Troopers [kinda like the Star Wars equivalent of Dead Space]

Before that I read Darth Bane number three, Dynasty of Evil. After Death Troopers I'm either going to get back into Order of the Phoenix or, Soul Music. I am also reading the Essential Silver Surfer. Probably going to start on Civil War soon. I recently read Secret Wars ^^

Currently reading The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. Quite enjoyable. I read a little, though not as much as I should.
