Is it just me or are the ones who did the bullying unsuccessful morons who never left their hometown and never really grew up or accomplished anything?

There are a few reasons.

1. Acceptance. As ashamed as I am to admit this, in my elementary school days, I would occasionally join in on the teasing of one of the members of our class. To this day, I don't know why we chose him to torment... All I knew was that I wanted to be part of the group. It was like having friends, as terrible a justification as that is.

2. Inoculation. It's like the great Johnny Cash once said, "Get tough or die." Some kids bully out of fear of rejection, and so choose to reject the world first by putting on a facade of cruelty.

3. Sadism. Simply put, some kids just like to cause other kids pain. They're the same kids you'll see pulling the wings off flies and growing up to vote Republican.

ncie bullet points. Except the Sadists also grow up to be dictators and corporate CEOs

It works. Seriously. No one will fuck with you, if they think you are the one with big one.

I like to mess with people.I find a person's weak spot and poke at it until I go too far, then apoligize. I guess that constitutes bullying, but I don't really do it to hurt people, I'm simply testing limits.

Why does the poll imply that one must have either been a bully or been bullied themselves? I for one apply to neither category.

This seems like an 'either-or fallacy' or whatever you crazy kids are calling it now-a-days.
I was much much bigger than all the other kids in my class, I was not a bully though. I would often step in when other kids were being picked on needlessly though; that often got me into trouble but my dad told me to do what's right when I'd get home.
I was kind of like a real-life crappy comic book superhero for middle-schoolers.

IN answer to the OP's question. I work in law enforcement so I still... kind of do the same thing... I guess because I still think of people needing my help even if they don't want it.

Man, I hate to say it, but I bullied a lot of kids. I was a real dick, and it goes to show that people can change given time. And you know what the fucked up thing is? One of the kids I was a real bastard to ended up killing himself. Granted this was a year after I left the school, but I still felt real bad about it afterwards.

I will say one thing though. There are some kids who are just asking to be "bullied". Anybody that pushes the envelope, so to say, to any extreme is putting themselves in a position to be ridiculed, and I think a lot of it is just human nature. That doesn't make it right, but even people like Abraham Lincoln suffered severe persecution at the hands of others, especially with a mob-like mentality. This is what happens in school.

So, to all the Goths or Punks or whatever clique you choose to be a part of, remember. The more you try to create an extreme image for yourself, the more people will get on your case. I find that the people that be themselves are genuinely more well-liked by their peers for not belonging to any specific social group, and end up more well-rounded for it.

As a physically underdeveloped geeky kid in grade school, I was the victim of bullying by the Moe from Calvin and Hobbes types. I always wished I could get bigger and get even.

Well, somewhere around age 11 puberty kicked in in a very big, very emphatic way, I became athletic virtually overnight, and I never forgot those kids who made my life hell (and who were anxiously awaiting their own puberty hormones.) I came to sixth and seventh grade to kick ass and chew bubble gum...and I was all out of bubble gum.

Moral of the story: Be careful who you pick on, because nature is a mother.

I've had a few experiences both bullying and being bullied.

The almighty reason I figured most bully's have is insecurity. They want to join the crowd and fit in so they immitate the ones who seem the strongest. Which are the bully's from the higher class's.

When finally puberty kicks in it also helps vent their puberal frustrations. Back when I still had school. One of the biggest bastards parents where devorcing. He probably was just sad and just vented all that frustration on bullying.

I'm not saying bullying is right and that we should be sympathetic. I'm just saying there is always more to the story.
