its just reaction time mostly. most of my friends on xbox who played call of duty set their control sensitivity to 10 and just spazzed out for about 5 hours a day

of course it does, no question. the people who said no just hate the game, and this is just another thread dedicated to those people.

Sort of. Mostly Twitch Reactions. The "skill" required to play the game mostly focuses on who has the reflexes to shoot, or whatever first. In close combat, whoever reacts first wins. At long range, camp, and shoot. It requires little to no skill.

It requires a certain modicum of skill, just like any other game. Someone who has never played it will not pick up a controller for the first time and become a master.

A little. Not too much. I mean, getting into it and strategizing with your team takes some skill (making your team listen to you in the first place is just luck).

But come on, if I can pick up a controller and go +3K/D on my first match ever, then there isn't much involved here.
Exactly. I got a 27-14 with only knifing so it can't be that hard. And i almost never FPS game online.
Then the other team must have been terrible.
OR I'm good. And it doesn't take much skill.
OR the other team was terrible. And it does take skill.

Good players will always beat bad players in Call of Duty. That is, by definition, what skill is.
Agreed completely. Although I dont play CoD myself, it seems only logical that this is the case. It might not be strategizing, like an RTS, except perhaps for picking your loadout or the odd claymore now and then. It's not like an RPG either, it doesnt really involve planning. I suppose the skill that CoD requires is largely an ability to adapt and react to any kind of situation the game, and the other players, throws at you.

Half skill/Half connection.

I've played more FPS shooters then you can count and I can honestly say I'm good at most of them. But it usually revolves around if you have a 4bar and your good, you could almost always beat a great player with a 1-2 bar connection.

From experience of course.

It's the age old question since CoD 4. I was wondering what Escapist thought. Me personally? I don't think so. Certainly takes some basic skill, but besides hoping you're connection is good enough and whether the other guy is ready or not plays a large part.
No i'm sorry thats absolute rubbish, and I say it as an active hater of COD4. any FPS has considerable scope for skill... I could post some youtube vids to illustrate my point but to be frank i'm still to shocked that there is any gamer in existence who can even doubt the fact.

FPS is 99% skill, 1% everything else, from connection to graphics card, to settings and so on. This is more or less true in some games than others but the proportion will only alter by a few percent. Edit: Assuming of course your graphics card etc is within spec for the game.. obviously you're not going to get very far in COD4 sporting a 3DFX banshee or with a 200+ ping

I don't even see that there is any possible argument here, just the fact that CAL and CPL exist not to mention the professional gamers and the global tournaments... hell I could go on giving reasons all day long.

With CoD it's about predicting how an opponent will react in a given situation. For example, I remember I once threw my Nova Gas into a corridor to get a two guys. I almost killed them with it and walked in with my Tactical Mask to finish them off. They predicted that and ducked behind some chest-high cover which made it difficult for me to find them because of the gas blocking my view. Other than that it's about seeing your opponent first, really.

So by your logic...If someone who never plays the game does good then the opposite team must suck. I would argue it but then you probably wouldn't understand since you are already hell bent on thinking they must have sucked.
No, I'm not. I'm simply arguing that we should consider the possibility that they did. A follow-up question, how well did you do the next round? Or the one after that?

I would like to hear your argument, by the way. Unless of course it would be wasted on such an ignorant, narrow-minded person as myself?

There's certainly some aspect of skill involved, but I'm willing to argue that there's less of a skill window there than in some games. Put me into Call of Duty or Battlefield at a tournament level and I'm sure I'll get some kills and make a showing for myself. Put me into a Starcraft 2 tournament and I'll be eliminated every match, quite possibly without killing a single enemy unit.

All shooters require twitch, being able to bring your target into the cross hairs and pulling the trigger, and being faster at it then everyone else.

Considering how fast you can die in most CoD games, I'd say the game requires less skill than most other shooters.

My KDR Remained about 1.4 for all the rounds after that. As for my argument I would say i don't play many FPS games online. But the ones i have played and do play i am great at. To say that they suck only because i have never played it before is like saying an apple pie will taste bad because i have never made it before. All you know is that i haven't played the game before and don't play FPS online nor do i like to brag about my skill. I did something with ease and thats it. Also in one round one person did suck. They admitted to it. Aside from that everyone was about equal.
So if you seem to do great in every FPS you play, wouldn't that indicate a natural ability for FPS games on your part, rather than every single one you've played not requiring skill?

it requires calm. so long as you can think, you will do fine, but getting pissed is what makes you do bad
