I read the interview, and you quoted him waaaaay out of context. He said that audiences are clamoring for a new Call of Duty experience, and was talking about subscription fees to pay for that.

I don't play Call of Duty online now, and never will if it becomes subscription. However, you shouldn't quote out of context.

Ok. I figured someone would do that for just that reason, that's why the answer is mildly sarcastic.

I did? My bad. I'll be sure to fix that in future threads. Thanks. I didn't mean to, but the point still stands. It all comes back to "I don't want to have a CoD subscription."

I don't recall when purchasing this game that it had a statement on the box that a monthly fee would be required. Therefore they should refund everyone who feels misled into making their purchase of CoD:MW2.
I know I would welcome the chance to get my money back as do most others who feel ripped off now.

Hardly clamoring over here. In fact, I think that game's a yawn. I'll take my money elsewhere, thanks.

I'm not about to pay a fee in order to play online. I'll be sticking to single player. Unless, of course, I find a better shooter. How's Medal of Honour looking these days? I haven't played it since the PS1 era.

There's a reason that I don't play WOW... I refuse to paw a monthly subscription to a game that I already payed for.... And if Activision actually impliments it... Well, I just won't buy their games... Simple as that.
People like you do not understand how MMOs work.

There's server upkeep, that costs massive amounts of money to keep the service good and running at all. There's customer service, which, while widely criticized in most MMOs, still requires a lot of money payed in wages. And frankly, it's better to have something then nothing at all - having played a lot of MMOs, I found customer service more or less good in all of them, WoW included.

Then there's new content. Have you seen most "traditional" games receive the kind of growing content as MMOs do? Dozens of patches that offer improvements to gameplay, bug fixes, new instances, changed abilities, and overall improvements (or nerfs, depending on what side you're on).

Has Oblivion ever receive official bug fixes, game balancing, and everything? No. It's all in hands of volunteer modders who do a great job, I might add.

While by no means a micro-transaction and ad-powered MMOs impossible - games like D&D online or Runescape prove it, there are plenty of reasons for some people to prefer subscriptions.

15 bucks per month isn't much. It's something like 2 cheap lunches in some fast food place. I spend more money on beer and pop, way more.

And frankly, as far as getting the bang for your buck (obvious prostitute-related puns not included) I think I'd rather play 15 bucks a month for a game that keeps improving, then 60 bucks for a game that stays the same and offers something like 10 hours of gameplay (which is 1 weekend for me).

Someone really needs to take a screenshot of the poll and shove it in front of Bobby Kotick's money hungry eyes.

MoH is actually looking quite nice right now. I started a thread about the beta that begins tomorrow officially for all systems, so you can see what people think of it there.

The only thing we are "clamoring" for is for someone to take their thumbs out of their asses and fix the problems with MW2.

And yet, like the complete asshat that he is, Kotick's response is "Pay me more money and then maybe I'll get around to it." Nice.

Karma's a *****, asshole.

Just went and looked up some trailers. It certainly looks like a lot of fun, so I guess I know what FPS I'm going to keep an eye on.

According to this article, [http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/41586/World-of-WarCraft-Costs-200-Million-to-Maintain] Blizzard spent $200 million maintaing WoW for just under 4 years up to the end of 2008, which includes everything you just mentioned (i.e. not initial development costs, but everything else). Being generous and assuming that half is just for 2008, a high point for the game with about 11 million subscribers, does that sound about right? That gives you $8.3 million per month for 11 million people, or $0.75 per person per month. That might be after tax, so before the ~25% rate of tax that would be $1 per person per month. That doesn't sound very expensive to me. Valve do all but the server upkeep for free for TF2, so it really can't be that much to do.

$15 a month does also add up, and it isn't as cheap as you think. $180 a year? Are you really getting good value and enjoyment out of playing it lots, or are you just playing it to justify the cost? I know people who have admitted as much here, and UK prices are even more of a rip off.

For sure. I almost wrote it off until I saw the "Leave A Message" trailer, and then I started looking into it more.

It makes the game seem really personal, and a bit messed up, especially if you know someone who's in Afgahnistan. The Tier 1 guys who helped on the game actually told the devs to remove some things from the game because they were "hitting too close to home."

I'll bet, it's impressive that they got actual soldiers to help in the development (or at least, I'm assuming they're actual soldier from your post. Google isn't being much help right now). I haven't heard of many game companies doing that. Granted, I could be wrong and there just isn't much info.
