A movie doesn't rely on (or at least shouldn't rely on) self righteousness, just because "the bad guy" is successful does not mean the movie was un-entertaining or in-intelligent. sometimes a movie can become better, more realistic, dramatic, and heart wrenching if the "bad guy" comes out on top. Besides, who the "bad guys" is, its subjective, just put yourself in the other guys shoes, sympathize with what he feels and what those around the country/ world/ universe the show takes place in.

Bad is just your morals, some people think the "bad guy" in some movies can be justified.

I only root for a good ending; it doesn't matter to me whether or not the good guy wins (except for Funny Games. I soooooo rooted for the bad guys to win that one. I loved Peter and Paul). Just give me a good ending and I'll be satisfied.

Look at Watchmen and you'll know the answer is:
yes.
Funny that was the first thing my mind went to.

code geass ends with the villain winning and carrying on his master plan
the ending is still a happy one for it (given what that plan is)
the again, the villain is also the protagonist so...
This. Lelouche was a fucking genius.

Deathnote should've ended with Light killing off everyone, then the credits roll and the series is finished.

As is, it turned into just another anime, albeit a brilliant one.

Be good and be successful is a different thing.

Good, yes, successful among masses, no.

In american movies its standard that the good guys win against all odds and whatever else but in foreign films it the hero can lose or a major character can be killed.
Think about Hidden tiger flying dragon although the hero's beat the villian two out of the three heros died and that's a pretty striking ending.

He wasnt really a bad guy though, and in the end it kinda works out for everyone. It can work out if its a horror movie.

If he'd
Resisted the urge to gloat until after everyone died
he would have won.

Or chosen a better, less insane follower.

For a good movie, either the good guy wins, or theres a point to the whole thing, or both.

Well it depends if the story leaves you without the last-big-unanswered-twist-questions that I hate so much. It it doesn't have those, then I don't care who wins although I would like to see the baddie win for once and go on undefeated without having a squeal interfere.
