I've never been ashamed to buy a game, however, there are certain games I wont play in front of my family.
The guy at the counter was trying to imply that Catherine was a bit risque when I went to buy it as in he was scared it might ruin my innocence or something...
***** I did not wait god knows how many extra months for this game only for some guy to imply my taste in games is a bit weird and try to weasel me out of it!
I just recommended him Persona 4 and waited for him to scan the bloody game. Good times.
Though when I went to buy Bayonetta the guy at the counter had obviously played it before since he was all "oh wow that's game is awesome" mode.
Oh if you really don't want the sideways glances, go to Amazon. It's cheaper and less expensive!

Hrm. I've never been ashamed in a store while buying a game or anything but there are some things on steam that I might not have been so comfortable with buying IRL. It probably wouldn't have stopped me but frankly, the less incredulous looks I have to deal with the better.
I do not care what retailers or random store goers may or may not think of me when I buy games. I would maybe be a little hesitant if I had to actually ask for help finding a game like Catherine or Lollipop Chainsaw, but I don't really like doing that for any game.
Family is another story. Still not ashamed, but just don't feel like dealing with the hassle of explaining why I want to play games like that.
For more silly, kiddie (for lack of a better word) like LittleBig Planet, I wouldn't care at all.

I could see being embarrassed to buy something like Lollipop Chainsaw or pretty much anything DoA...but I could also see being embarrassed to buy the movie or book equivalent.
I supposed I'd be vaguely embarrassed to admit on some boards that I enjoy Call of Duty and Gears of War...I'd probably be compelled to say I like Amnesia, Limbo and the Binding of Isaac.

A Pokemon game. It involves 15-year-olds being forced into collecting animals and have them fight for money to power them up and improve their efficiency in more killing, and leave home and school in order to pursue a sick childish fantasy.

Too be honest, I was a little nervous and embarrassed when I decided to purchase Bayonetta. It was a really good game though. Now-a-days, I don't feel embarrassed at all buying certain games.
My family, mainly my dad, seems to like to annoy me based on what games I play. Viva Pinata just because of it's cutesy demeanor, games like Valkyria Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles just because I can play as girls, ect. I know it's supposed to be in good jest, but it still kinda bugs the crap out of me. Especially when I'm trying to get into said games.

I'm a lady. I get weird looks just being in a game shop sometimes. But the plus side is I can buy whatever I want, because a lot of the time people will assume it's not for me anyway.
The only thing I don't like is when I'm in a shop looking at the magazine racks. They always put the gaming magazines next to the soft-porn magazines. When I stand there deciding what to buy I get some funny looks.

On-topic: I have been embarrassed in the past when buying video games, though I am mostly over it now that I am a bit older and also care less about other people´s opinion of me as a "gamer."

In fact, when I went into the local GameStop to pick up my copy of Lollipop Chainsaw, the salesman behind the counter was so enthused as a gamer himself, that he offered to throw in the freaking window display of Lollipop Chainsaw at the front of the store.
Naturally, I accepted. I carried that poster out of the store with pride, not shame.
There it is on my bedroom door, and there it will stay. Do I care if anybody sees it?

Definately. For example, I would probably die if I had to buy Katawa Shoujo or Catherine in a store, regardless of how good they both are.
I have absolutely no shame in buying anything I want to. I might have used to when I was younger, but sometime around when I turned 20 I realised that it was my hobby to enjoy the way I wanted and anyone who had a problem with it could just go sit and spin.
Also, when you buy manga, especially the M Rated adult stuff, you have to get used to the disgusted looks of others. Buying Battle Royale Volume 8 was a really nasty experience when I was younger.
