Why should we be able to decide what they pay for? That doesn't make sense to me.
I agree. It isn't our place to dictate how they run their company. If you don't like a company's product, you stop buying. You don't start dictating. You can make suggestions, but that's about the limit of it. *I'd* suggest trying to work it out with EC, cause, I think it was this sites best show, but, it's their call.

If The Escapist CEO can't pay the bills, why don't they put up some ads on their site? I see lots of blue space on the sides for potential ads. I know people hate ads when they're browsing, but it's better than having to deal with this nonsense.

We do. The Escapist runs shows and watch how much they get viewed. If they're not pulling in enough viewing figures and the Escapist can't afford to keep unpopular shows, they can them.

You are asking...

"Should people who view free content be in charge of what content gets paid for?"

No.

Because people who view free content have NOT invested ANYTHING MONETARY in that content.
Even as a club member you dont have a say. As a club member, you are handing them your money and trusting that the content they provide will be to your liking. If you wanted control over what content gets shown, you will have to contribute to the purchasing and payment of content providers. And if you're able to do that, you might as well have your own website.

If you dont like it, dont watch it.
If you pay for it and dont like it, dont pay for it.

Here's the thing, there shouldn't be the need to decide which content gets paid for. If people are making content for The Escapist at the behest of The Escapist they deserve to be paid regardless if a million people or no people at all view the content. It's as simple as that.

It seems that The Escapist may have it's self spread too thinly and that may be what is leading to content creators not being paid in a timely manner. I don't know for certain if that is the case but if it is then there needs to something done that brings the amount of content being created in line with what The Escapist can afford to pay for in a timely fashion. This may mean getting rid of some content or it may mean possibly restructuring arrangements with some of the current content but either way if they are unable to afford all the content they are currently commissioning then something need to be done to remedy that.

Well don't we already do?

The shows and content that are popular and get hits are the ones the Escapist will fund.

Any content the community doesn't like, presumably, won't be viewed and taken down.

If they are tracking page-views and click-through correctly, we probably already are.

The videos that are watched the most make more advertising money. In theory, the most watched videos would receive the larger portion of the advertising revenue so that they could continue to produce the videos that generate that revenue.

Again, in theory.

That blue space isn't viable ad space since it doesn't appear on everyone's screen.

People with high resolution and 16:10 monitors may see empty blue spaces, but people with lower resolutions and/or 4:3 monitors won't see any borders.

The blue spaces disappear at 1024x768 and even at medium resolutions like 1280x1024 or 1366x768 they aren't fully visible.

You can't sell ad space that not everyone will see or that will only display half of an advert for some people (even if it's only a minority).

If you are going to do that, what would be more effective is to make all the shows pay per view and make them extremely cheap like 10 to 25 cents per view. That way the people who make content get paid, the site generates revenue from advertisements to keep the site afloat and it rewards good content over bad content, all without all the extra fuss.

Now, with that said. I AM NOT ENDORSING THAT IDEA I am simply presenting what would likely be a more productive and effective alternative than what was presented by the OP.

Presumably the Escapist does not choose where to spend its money by tossing darts at a list of names.

Giving random internet people a say in things they don't have much detail or interest in seems like a questionable decision.
Yeah. I think I've said somewhere before about story lines etc. in games; if the developers listen solely to what the fans want, in short, they'll probably be mostly left with a load of crap, to put it as lightly as possible, lol. Same goes here.

EDIT: However, there's nothing wrong with listening to and even considering suggestions made by their target audience because, at the end of the day, we are the target audience but as I've said previously and just as thaluikhain has stated, they can't just go for it.

Oh, God good because that would just annoy me. LOL. I prefer having to sit through repeated ads because all that will just add up in no time at all!
