perhaps not, as it can sometimes be difficult without the inflection of voice to gauge it by.
Indeed, although it should be noted that Gruthar got it straight away :p Maybe there's some sort of psychic signal sent to the intended recipient that clues them in...or perhaps not.

Yup, the majority of British cars are manual, so we tend to learn to "drive stick". I haven't driven an auto, but I feel you wouldn't get the same kind of control as you do with a clutch and gearbox.

No, I can't and I don't want to learn either.
My boss however had to learn how to drive a stick for his driving test... That was the first time he drove a stick.

I never drove an automatic one, and don't think I ever will.

and to all you euro ........ people, if you built cars instead of oversized golfcarts you wouldnt be needing to shift down going up hills :p
You do know that the best cars are made in Europe, not the U.S.

Took me about 5 days to learn proficiently. Now I never want to drive an automatic. Top down, two seats and a clutch is all I want now.

Edit: Now that I think about it having gas and brake pedals would be appreciated.

even had a PM from some nitwit giving me all the reason that the Euro car makers will take over the world and free us oppressed Americans from the evil Big 3 ............ eventualy ..... sometime in the next 2,000 years anyhow.
Is that with or without taxpayer bailouts? :)

Personally I'd keep an eye on the Japanese.
hell in my opinion id allready buy Japanese over American, its been that way for a long time with me.

at my age all other reasons for buying a car besides quality are gone. i want a car now that will give me as much value for my cash as its possable to get. that automaticaly cuts out American made in my opinion.

the Japs (no slur intended) make great cars in my price range that Americans just dont. when a toyota pickup gets a million miles on nothing but basic service, and a new F-150 is lucky to get 100,000 for $5 - $10K more dollers and you need atleast $10K in repare costs to even get that, its just no question.

id love to be able to buy American again but unless the big 3 start meeting Jap quality as well as price it wont be happening any time soon.

I can drive a manual, in fact I don't know anyone who drives an automatic. What's the point? With a manual you have more control, you can be more fuel efficient if you care about it and you can accelerate faster by choosing when to change gear rather than letting the car do it.

Oh and to Wyatt, european cars are far superior to american cars

One thing I want to know is what do you do with the left foot in an automatic?

I had to teach myself to drive a stick so I could get my first car. I think everyone should start out with a stick, they are much more fun than an automatic and I think it makes a driver more in-tune with their car and any car down the road after that experience.

I drive a motorcycle, which is manual transmission. It's a little harder then drive a manual car, but it's really fun.

Sometimes I wish my Trans Am was manual, when I get bored I'll sometimes throw into first when i take off then shift it back into drive. My girlfriend loves the sound it makes when it's running at a high RPM

Yup! I live in Japan and chose to learn how to drive manual. You have to get a different license depending on the kind of vehicle you drive, and I REALLY wanted a manual skyline for my first car. You can imagine how simple the automatic license driving test was after that <3

As simple as that. When I was living in the US, I was the only person I knew who could drive a car with a stick shift, which I found very very bizarre, since it was so much more practical for me (I like to shift down when I'm going uphill, and automatic cars don't do that)
Actually, automatic cars will do that WHEN Necessary. If it is unnecessary, you are actually hurting the engine and transmission both. That said, I do drive a stick shift quite well, even though my current car is an Automatic. Hell, it is a Cadillac, what do you expect from a cruising car. It isn't MEANT to be powerful, it just is...
I'd love a Cadillac.
The only automatic car I've driven in my life was a rented Dodge Grand Caravan. It took some time to get used to it (I kept reaching for the stick shift) but it was definitely more comfortable. What really bothered me is that I never learned how to properly place my left foot. It just kind of sat there idly, doing nothing until "OMG BRAKES BRAKES BRAKES!"

My favourite kind of cars are 60s-70s model Ford Falcons, and those would be completely ruined by an automatic. I love the sound the clutch makes: k'shink! chewm!

can't beat american muscle for that delicious loud ass grumble that real cars make. :D
Hell, my CADILLAC makes that sound, and it is supposed to be quiet... Not for much longer though. I will be shelling out $600 for a high-flow cat, custom exhaust, and dual chrome tips. Can't wait to let the world know that I drive a V-8 just by turning it on!
lol usually educated people know that my car has a V8,
thanks to the little 'srt8' on the back. :D

but yeah, i'm gonna get a custom exhaust eventually so that my car isn't just loud, but obnoxiously loud. yessssssir.
