Playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and CoC: Dark Corners of The Earth lately, along with many other indie games, I've noticed I will gladly play a game with glaring faults just to experience a story I love, or characters I want to see experience the story. What is it that will have you over look faults in a game?

EDIT: Sorry forgot to include fun and game play as a lone option. That would be why there is the other option. For things I wasn't thinking of. CoC: DCotE and A: tDD isn't really "fun" But lovecraftian (atomsphere)themes make the game worth playing for the story.

I looked over Zeno Clash's linearity because of fuckin' everything else.
I looked over Doom's graphics because of the gameplay.
I looked over Boxes' simplicity because of the...simplicity? ._.

Anyway, it happens alot to me. :3

All of the above. If the story, the characters, atmosphere, or something else are good enough they can make up for a game's other faults. But it's all about balance. How cool is the (let's say) story and how big are these faults. The good needs to outweigh the bad.

I voted other because there is way too much to take into consideration.

Dragon Age: Origins has shit for graphics, long loading times, and it has frozen on several occasions and you know what? I love the game.

The game was fun to play, the story was well put, and the characters (including your own in regards to dialogue options) were pretty well developed.

So yes I can overlook a games faults if it's fun to play. Everyone can for that matter, because no game is perfect.

Mirror's Edge has a junk combat system, requires repeated plays to get the feeling of smooth, flowing gameplay, and excessively long in-between bits that didn't need to be that long (the truck in the Boat level, the elevators, etc).

It's still the most enjoyable game I've played.

Pretty much all of the above. Though the story and its characters was always most important to me. Only reason I got through The Getaway on PS2.

I am willing to overlook everything except gameplay. As long as the gameplay is good, I'll play the game.

Yeah, that seemed really weird to me.
Please add that and gameplay (and others, I'm sure there are a lot of reasons).

It depends on what I have to overlook. What are the glaring faults?

With Fallout New Vegas I was willing to overlook the smaller map, lack of random encounters, and relatively shallow locations but I just couldn't overlook all the technical issues.

And with No More Heroes, I was willing to overlook a lot but the gameplay was just so tedious, repetitive, and uninspired that I just don't get what it is everybody likes about it.

So I guess I can overlook certain things if the game actually works but not tedious gameplay.

I overlooked Shadow of Memories sometimes odd mechanics because I loved the story. (And I thought the protagonist had a cute character model, but whatever - the story moreso than that.)

I couldn't play Dragon Age: Origins due to the sound design. No matter how many enemies are on screen it always sounds like there are three times as many and they are constantly growling or snarling, it becomes very off-putting and overbearing.

I wanted to love it but I couldn't get past that one thing.

Other than that I am pretty much able to enjoy any games unless the controls really kill the game play, and I cant think of a game I have played that has done that yet. Lair came close to that but the patch which I also included a few dragons as a form of "apology" fixed that pretty decently.

as long as the game has something going for it I will play it.

some games have UBER graphics and stuff but the stories and gameplay is so boring I just can't play them.

I'm a lot about atmosphere. If I can be immersed in a game chances are I won't even care if the graphics suck or if the gameplay is horrible. Though obviously if the faults are so obnoxious there's no way in the world I can be immersed and therefore I can't find myself entertained by it.

Yeah, I mean I can ignore a game's faults because it has a great story. But as a huge fan of 3D platformers, I'm often ignoring a childish story because the game is so damn fun.
