I could spell potato before my third birthday (and was reading on a twelfth-grade level at age four---thanks Mom!)

Anyone who thinks it's "cute" for small children to act like idiots needs to be smacked for dereliction of duty to their children. It's true what they say about little kids---they're sponges and will soak up whatever good or bad their parents put on offer for them. Raise your little ones to be intelligent and they'll be head of the class.

You don't even need to have kids with naturally high IQs---when I was in high school, the best student (valedictorian, in fact) was of mediocre intelligence but made up for it with intense study habits and work ethic. (then again, she also drank herself to death her freshman year at Harvard, so maybe pushing your kids to excel beyond their natural abilities can backfire badly.)

I could read when I was 5. by the time I was 6 I was reading things like the hardy boys and some sci fi stuff. Her mom probably never took the time to work with her.

Po-tate-o or Po-tat-o, whatever it is it's not in her mental dictionary.

Well at least it's not as bad as the people in the college I used to go to. They were around 17 or so, and most of them couldn't even spell mouse, and one of them thought 100 / 10 = 3.4. I decided not to do the second year of the course after that.

Really bad thread
I like it, this guy is basically saying this girl is really stupid and no one is doing anything to help out, including him.

Dude, the girl is young and she's learning, she gets reaction from saying certain sounds so she repeats them.

The reason she changed from a "b" sound to a "p" is that she was told it was wrong the first time, so she switched it to see if that was right, once again, she got a reaction.

Not a good or bad reaction, but a reaction none the less, and she liked it. She'll be doing more phrases soon enough.
Or y'know, I was commenting on the quality of the thread and not of the skill of this girl. Besides...why don't you read ALL of my posts before quoting my first one.

ALL your posts? You'd only posted twice by the time ColdStorage quoted you. The first was "really bad thread" with no details or qualifying remarks and the second time was to tell Amnestic to eat your shorts and judge his and/or my potential parenting skills (which wasn't the issue in the first place). It wasn't until the third post that you gave anything in the way of an explanation to "really bad thread", then attack us for not reading that second post which didn't even try to expand on the first. If you're going to leave ambiguous statements then attack people who call you out on it, maybe these forums are not the right place for you. We can't read your mind, only your words, so maybe you should choose them a little more carefully.

I was commenting on the quality of the thread and being sarcastic about how he's not doing anything about it too.

Reading your other posts doesn't really matter does it?, you yourself has commented on how poorly made this thread is, which includes my comments as well.

When I was five I could certainly spell potato, but I guess I wa a little smarter than the average kid anyway, I was one of the only ones who could read more than little picture books in grade two. Now I'm not sure if this is sad because everyone else was stupid or if it does infact mean that I was smarter than average. Either way it seems the majority of kids aren't very literate. There are still people about a year older than me(and I'm about 15) that stumble over easy words when reading, and have difficulty spelling common things. So I don't know, maybe I'm going on another "the world is stupid" mini rant but there's my *insert number here* cents.

My 5-year old cousin probably won't be able to, simply because 'potato' is an English word. He would easely be able to write down the Dutch word 'aardappel' though, and probably a lot more since he is very intelligent for his age. It's incredible what stuff he's already reading.

How could I have commented on YOUR post when I posted before you?

Five-year-old what? The only thing I have that's five years old is a pair of Chuck Taylors.
Wow, you're lucky. Most of my shoes don't last the year!
Oh, Chuck Taylors are indestructible. I've had a Chuck Taylor jacket for about ten years. The leather on the sleeves is ruined and no amount of time with a fabric shaver can help the look of the wool, but it does what a jacket should do.

I could only spell my name and a couple of other things when I was 5. I wouldn't worry.

I knew multiplication and other basic math by the time I was 6. And same goes for reading fairly advanced books (By "advanced" I mean not the shitty kid stuff, but things like The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings).

On the other hand, I didn't speak english back then so it could be different. But I could probably spell "kartoshka" in the right letters when I was 5. Don't know.

I've got no idea how it is for kids in general, I assume I wasn't a very normal kid when I was 6.

Honestly, it's pretty sad. I taught myself to read before I was 3, and learned to speak clearly and in complete sentences at 1.5 years. I cannot stand what the standard for intelligence has become in this pathetic country, the U.S. If only I were old enough to fucking move. (16)
Quick fact for both of you - I wanted to be a grown up until I left home, at which point all I wanted was to be a kid again. There's plenty of time to be pretentious little dicks after you hit twenty, please, act like actual kids while you have the chance.

I'm sure kids who grow up too fast are the ones that become serial killers. It all makes sense to me...
