So this will be the first election that I can vote in.

After doing my research I'm leaning towards the Liberal party but I'm not completely convinced yet and a strong argument for one of the other other parties might be enough to make me reconsider. This is your chance to sway me and voters like me to your side. Happy arguing.

I thought your democracy dissolved or something?
Something about a vote of no confidence?

why are you voting if you're asking for who to vote for? isnt that the point of a democracy with free voting (obviously realize this is Canada).

I'd say don't let other people choose for you, if you can't decide then don't vote. I'm leaning toward the conservatives myself but I'll not try and force you to vote for them.

I don't trust that shifty Ignatieff. Harper is a robot without any real emotion or empathy. Jack Layton seems the most sensible of the three but I don't like his party or platform and no one trusts it after last time they got in.

Personally I'm making good use of my time and not voting. Doesn't make a difference who you vote for, doesn't make a difference who wins. Won't really affect anything in the long run until the system works better or there are real choices that have a chance of winning.

And this really shows why. Not picking on you or anything, a lot of people don't give a shit about politics. And most of the people who do care about politics aren't very educated about it anyway.

Most people's political beliefs come from the lowest common denominator soft of advertisements and propaganda. That's what works, so that's what politicians put most of their effort into. Its a vicious circle of ignorance and corruption.

Vote of no confidence just means we vote for a new prime minister, basically. We don't have set term durations like the USA.

ignatif has spent more time in america than campaigning in canada in the last 10 years, and wants to add the parts of american politics that don't work to ours, so liberals can suck it. layton wants to conjure money magickally out of thin air, and esentially throw it down the drain, and then funnel the rest of the budget down various systems that need revamping and balancing, rather than cash to waste on. so ndp can suck it. bloc FINALLY acknowlages that it's part of a whole country now, but still, they don't give a fuck, and want a minority gov, with them involved, so bloc is out. green can suck my nuts, forever. the only thing harper has going for him is 2 things-1, the minority gov he was in never let him do jack shit, even when he was doing what they wanted, all for the sole reason of the fact harper got in, and not one of the other dudes that were fighting for the position. and even if it wasen't harper, same shit would have happened garunteed. and 2- we already know what he wants and is going to do, and frankly, it's not really that bad, better than any other politician since pierre trudeau, so, he's my vote.

I need to point out one important thing: You should never vote for a party. Pay attention to who your candidates are. If people vote for an idiot, they will be represented by an idiot. Even if their party ends up forming government, the ridings represented by idiots will be ignored.

This is an interesting election for me, because this is the first time there has been more than one non-idiot candidate. After a lot of thought, I've decided to vote for the NDP candidate. She's shown herself capable over the last few years, even though their leader leaves quite a lot to be desired. But then that's true of all five party leaders this year.

I have no idea where in this great nation you live, but I'm glad you're at least giving our democracy a go. Not enough people our age bother with it. Good on you.

It's not that I'm letting others choose for me. I'm still coming to a decision and I wanted to see some other perspectives.

That's actually a good point. I haven't put much thought into who my local candidates are. Back to research for me!

I would remind the people posting in this thread that we do not elect our prime minister. We elect MPs to represent our ridings. Based on which party holds the most ridings, they are permitted to form the government. The leader of the governing party then becomes prime minister. This is how our system works. Please pay attention to your candidates in future.

Also, I would cut off the criticism that a vote for any Conservative is, essentially, a vote for Harper, due to the amount he tries to control everything. Do however remember that this government was defeated by a Contempt of Parliament motion. The previous government openly defied the will of the House. Unelection is the least they deserve.

Every time the NDP gets in power (Manitoba, the Maritimes, BC...) they turn the province into a 'have-not' province. I'm shudder to think of how they will screw this country if they're somehow elected.
Personally, I'd like to see what Harper can do with a majority. If we don't like it, we can just vote him out next time.
